Kicker latest UTM watch list pick

Posted: Friday, August 3, 2012 12:00 pm

Cody Sandlin, a senior placekicker on the UT Martin football team, is one of 44 players on the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award Watch List.
The Goodlettsville native led the team in 2011 scoring with 87 points on 14-of-17 field goals and 45-of-48 point-after attempts. He made a career-long 53-yard field goal in season finale against Eastern Kentucky.
Sandlin was named an All-Ohio Valley Confer-ence first team selection and scored 13 points in 61-23 win over Austin Peay on Oct. 8.
He scored six points in 24-23 win over Eastern Illinois on Oct. 22.
Sandlin was an OVC Specialist of the Week nominee for his performance against Murray State, where he scored 12 points.
He averaged 56 yards on 60 kickoffs in 2011.
Off the field, Sandlin has participated in all team community service projects since his freshman year, including cleaning up the Union City Park after an ice storm; Santa’s Village event; and food-drive volunteer for two years for Martin Parks and Recreation.
“These placekickers are terrific on the football field and off the field representing their schools, their football teams, their conferences, their communities, their families and themselves,” the award’s selection committee chairman Chris Kearney said.
The Watch List includes placekickers from more than 750 eligible colleges.
“It is a pleasure to include these fine young men on the Watch List for this award,” Fred Mitchell said.
“We are delighted to recognize the kickers based on outstanding performance in the community and expectations going into the 2012 college football season. It is also a thrill to see so many familiar names on the Watch List, including 22 placekickers that were finalists for the award last season.”
The breakdown of the 44 placekickers is as follows:
• Collegiate Division — 16 FCS, 11 Division II, 14 Division III, 0 NAIA and 3 NJCAA
• State — the place-kickers play at schools located in 25 different states, five play at schools in Pennsylvania
• Year — 23 Seniors, 14 Juniors, 7 Sophomores. Published in The WCP 8.2.12
