Show & Shine: Chamber to host ‘Cruise-In’ event
Show & Shine: Chamber to host ‘Cruise-In’ event | Show & Shine: Chamber to host ‘Cruise-In’ event

Show cars and car enthusiasts will line up one weekend in September in downtown Union City to look, cruise and “Show & Shine.”
The Obion County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Obion County Cruise-In Sept. 14-15. The event will feature a poker run, car show, live music, family entertainment and food. (See related photo, Page 2.)
The poker run will begin at 8 a.m. Sept. 15 at the Union City Masonic Lodge, located at 114 West Church St. The winner will get $300, second place will receive $200 and third place will get $100.
Afterward, the cruise gates will open at 9 a.m. for cars to “Show & Shine” on blocked off streets in downtown Union City. The gates will remain open until 5 p.m.
Participants can pre-register online or register Sept. 14 beginning at 1 p.m. The first 250 to register will receive goody bags with coupons for special deals at local businesses.
The “Show & Shine” is a non-judged, free event open to all street rods, classics, customs, muscle cars and highly-modified models. Door prizes will be offered for participants all day Sept. 15, and a drawing will also be held for $250.
Cruise music will be broadcast throughout the downtown area to set the mood, and “cruising the strip” will continue after the Show & Shine event.
“We encourage you to bring a lawn chair and sit along the street to watch show cars, trucks and motorcycles as they enter the ‘Show & Shine’ area,” a spokesman said.
During the event, 50/50 tickets will also be sold. Ticket holders will have the chance to win $25,000.
Block parties will be held during the Cruise-In from 8-11 p.m. Sept. 14-15. The first night’s block party will be at the Flea Market parking lot and the next night’s will be at Kiwanis Park.
Official Obion County Cruise-In apparel may be purchased at Riley’s Graphics on First Street.
A free train will be available to shuttle people from one end of First Street to the other for Day 2 of the event.
All money donated during the Cruise-In will go to the Obion County Cancer Agency.
“I need all businesses to help with this event by putting ‘Welcome Obion County Cruisers’ on all windows and signs at their place of business,” said Keisha Hooper, chairman of the Obion County Cruise-In Committee. “It is to bring out-of-towners into town to spend money in their business.”
Ms. Hooper requests that businesses remain open all day Sept. 14-15 to help with the event.
The Cruise-In will also coincide with Corn Fest events in Kiwanis Park Sept. 15. The festival will have free chicken, a Corn Hole tournament, a petting zoo and other contests and events.
If anyone would like to sponsor the Cruise-In, Ms. Hooper asks for a commitment by today.
The committee is beginning to advertise on T-shirts, the website and in brochures. Contact her at khooper@jddist.com or at 885-0096 if interested.
The current $1,000 sponsors are JD Distributors, NAPA Auto Parts, Commercial Bank, Union City Coca-Cola and the Obion County Chamber of Commerce. The $500 sponsors are Bottoms Up, Reelfoot Bank, First State Bank, First Choice Farm & Lawn, Terry Petty Chevrolet, Automotive Specialty and First Citizens National Bank.
More information about the events will be available later. Registration forms for “Show & Shine” are available at the Obion County Chamber of Commerce and online at www.obioncountycruisein.com.
