Sharon man faces assault charge

A Sharon man is in custody after an apparent domestic dispute led to a weapon being drawn.
According to Sharon Police Lt. Jason Edwards, he was flagged down by a woman shortly before 7:30 p.m. Thursday on North Martin Street.
The victim claimed she had managed to get away from her boyfriend, 57-year-old Sam Young, after the couple had gotten into an argument.
According to Edwards, the victim claimed Young pulled out a gun and threatened to kill her and himself.
Young said “he wanted to kill himself and get blood on her shirt,” according to Edwards.
Officers of the Sharon Police Department responded to the home and using a PA system, urged Young to come out of the house.
For nearly four and a half hours, members of local law enforcement, including the Special Response Team made up of officers from Martin and Obion County, attempted to have Young unarm himself and come out of the house.
Edwards said one last effort was made using the PA system before Young finally surrendered to officers.
The weapon involved was recovered, according to Edwards.
Young was taken into custody for a mental health evaluation.
He was charged with one count of aggravated assault Friday and is being held without bond.
“I am glad no one was hurt and Mr. Young did come out peacefully. The sheriff’s department and SRT were a big help during that incident and it is appreciated,” Edwards said.
