| Hickman celebrating ‘Emancipation Day’ |

Almost 150 years ago on Jan. 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln gave an executive order to free all slaves during the Civil War. It was called the Emancipation Proclamation.
Andrew Johnson, Ten-nessee’s former governor who later served as president, freed his slaves Aug. 8, 1863. Since then, “Aug. 8th” anniversary celebrations have popped up all over the Southeast.
In 2007, former Gov. Phil Bredesen signed legislation acknowledging Aug. 8 as “Emancipation Day.”
Hickman, Ky., will continue celebrating the holiday with its “Emancipation Proclamation 8th of August Celebration” Aug. 4-12.
A parade will kick off the celebration at 10 a.m. Aug. 4. The parade, sponsored by Warren Thomas Historical Society, will go down East Moscow and Seventh streets. A jam fest will follow the parade at 11.
The festivities will continue at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 with services at the New Bryants Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, located on Atwood Street in Hickman. For information on the services, contact Pam Dinwiddie a(270) 236-2366 or Loreatus Winters at (270) 236-1840.
A youth block party will be held from 8:30-10:30 p.m. Aug. 9 in the E.W. James & Sons Supermarket parking lot on Seventh Street in Hickman. Contact Paulette Stray at 236-3186 or Mark Roberson at (731) 332-9740 for more information.
A fashion and talent show will take place Aug. 10 at 7:30 p.m. The location will be announced later. Admission will be $2. The talent contest prizes are: $75 for first place, $50 for second place and $35 for third place. The celebration will feature the play “A Heavy Price to Pay,” a Penny Kinney Production, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. Admission will be $7 for adults and $3.50 for children ages 5-12. The play’s location will be announced at a later date. Call Penny Kinney at (731) 281-4316 for more information.
Aug. 12 will end the celebration with worship services at a church of your choice in Hickman. Sunday schools begin at 9:45 a.m., and church services start at 11.
The “8th of August Celebration” was organized by the 8th of August Committee.
