A group of community-minded individuals, business owners and elected officials have been busy prepping for an event designed to boost morale and welcome visitors in Greenfield.
The Greenfield Advancement Association announced it has been preparing for the city’s first-ever block party this weekend.
“We want the city, community and businesses to come together to enhance the better of the city,” event organizer and business owner Rick Williams told the Greenfield Board of Mayor and Aldermen during the board’s monthly meeting held last week.
The block party will coincide with the annual Sonic Antique Car Show, which is set for 3-8 p.m. in Greenfield Saturday. The block party will kick off at 5 and last until 10 p.m.
Planned events include a watermelon see-spitting contest, story-time, live music, a corn hole contest, inflatables, face painting, dunking booth and an illusionist. The event will also feature food, along with fellowship and people across the region are invited to help Greenfield celebrate its community spirit.
In other news, board members heard a positive report regarding sales tax collection for the city in May.
The sales tax collection total for May equaled $43,464.87.
“This is great for the town in that it was one of the highest monthly collections in the city’s history,” Greenfield Mayor Eddie McKelvy said.
In department head reports, Greenfield Police Chief Danny Harris reported the city hasn’t had a vehicle accident in the last two months.
Greenfield Fire Chief Bob Dudley reported the department was the recipient of a Forrest Grant totaling $5,500 to help purchase turnout gear and other items for the GFD.
Public works director Tony Stout announced the concrete work on the south end of town was “going very well.”
Weakley County Economic Development Board president Ronnie Price was on hand to accept a $3,150 quarterly contribution from the city during the meeting.
The Greenfield Board of Mayor and Aldermen meet the second Tuesday of every month in Greenfield City Hall, located in downtown Greenfield.
