UTM students earn national honors
Caryce Gilmore of Pigeon Forge; Marilauren Anderson of Friendship; and Chris Martin of Hermitage, recently attended the National Education Association (NEA) Conference in Washington, D.C. and received national honors.
Gilmore, an elementary education (K-6) major, was named a State Student Leader and was one of only three students in the nation elected to the NEA Board of Directors by the NEA Student Program delegates at the Student Leadership Conference. She will serve a one-year term.
Anderson, also an elementary education (K-6) major, represented the Tennessee Education Association at the NEA Representative Assembly by supporting a business item concerning bankruptcy and student loans. She negotiated an amendment with the maker of the motion and presented that amendment to 9,000 delegates. Her leadership resulted in a change of position by the Tennessee state delegation from “no position” to “support.” The item passed by vote of the national delegation.
Martin, a special education (K-12) major, was publicly recognized for his work on the NEA Committee for Human and Civil Rights throughout the 2011-12 academic year.
All three students serve as state officers for the Tennessee Student Teacher Education Association (STEA) and as local officers for the University of Tennessee at Martin chapter. At the conference, the UT Martin chapter of STEA also received an award for  “Local Excellence” for chapters with 201 members or more. This is a national award equivalent to “Outstanding Chapter of the Year.”
This award is presented to three local student chapters that have achieved excellence throughout the year by providing members with leadership and development opportunities in the areas of teacher quality, community outreach and political action. Chapters are categorized based on membership size. For more information, contact Beth Quick, chair of the Department of Educational Studies, at 881-7210 or by email at bquick@utm.edu.
