| Dolly to issue Braille books |

Country music superstar Dolly Parton is widely known for her music and her popular amusement park, Dollywood. In recent years, she has become an advocate for children’s literacy.
Parton began Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in 1996, which provides children with a specially selected book each month. She started the program to ensure children would have books despite their family’s income. She focused on her home county in East Tennessee when the program first started, but it has grown to include the rest of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
For the past year, she has expanded the program by partnering with the American Printing House for the Blind to issue many of the Imagination Library books in a digitial audio format for free. Now, they will also present five titles each year in Braille.
This year the five books are “Old Bear and His Cub,” “A Mud Pie for Mother,” “Roar of a Snore,” “Read to Tiger” and “Llama Llama Misses Mama.”
Parents and legal guardians of visually impaired children may sign their child up to receive these Braille books for free.
To sign up:
1. Visit www.aph.org/dpil/special;
2. Click on the Application Form (also located here: http://tech.aph.org/dpil/apply) and be sure to fill in each required field;
3. Complete the submission by clicking the “Enroll” button at the bottom of the screen;
4. In about 10 business days, a welcome letter will automatically be sent to the email address they have provided.
Children must be age five or younger to be eligible for the program. Applicants must live in the United States or its territories. The child must also be likely to use Braille as a future reading medium. The program will send a child five free books a year until their sixth birthday.
Only 200 copies of the above five titles are available, and access to the books will be based on a first come, first serve basis. The special period to sign up lasts 30 days, before the books will be made available to the general public on Aug. 3.
