Racers don’t look far for new softball coach
Kara Amundson has been hired as the new head softball coach at Murray State. Amundson is no stranger to the Racer program as she served as an assistant coach during the 2010-11 seasons.
“It is an honor getting the opportunity to take over the softball program here at Murray State,” said Amundson. “There is such a rich tradition in Racer athletics, and I am excited to be continuing my coaching career here. This program has had much success in its early years, and I am looking forward to moving it in a positive direction.”
“It’s always gratifying when the candidate that rises to the top of a search is someone I already know and respect,” said athletic director Allan Ward. “Kara’s playing and coaching experience has prepared her well for this opportunity.
“We have a talented group of young ladies on the team that I know will admire and embrace Kara’s leadership style and passion for the game. I’m very excited about the fact that Kara has agreed to become our next head coach.”
Amundson joined the Racers in 2009 after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Northern Illinois. In her second season, the Huskies advanced to the Mid-American Conference semifinals, while two players garnered first-team All-MAC laurels. She also tutored two student-athletes to academic all-conference honors in each of her two seasons.
Before joining the coaching ranks, Amundson was a four-year member of the DePaul softball team. The Coon Rapids, Minn., native helped the Blue Demons capture the 2003 Conference USA championship and the 2005 Big East championship.
The Blue Demons also advanced to the Women’s College World Series in 2005 and 2007. DePaul knocked off Northwestern in 2005, before defeating No. 3 Oklahoma in 2007.
During her senior season, Amundson helped the Blue Demons to the conference championship with a perfect 20-0 record in Big East action. DePaul went on to go 5-0 in postseason play on their way to the WCWS.
