Remember when takes a look back at the local stories from the files of The Messenger that took place 1, 5, 10, 20 and 30 years ago.
30 Years Ago
June 28 — Woodland Lime scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to beak WENK 5-3 in Union City Senior Babe Ruth play. Keith Powell was the winning pitcher over Greg Cochran as both went the distance. Tracy Bruff had three hits, while Powell, Greg Thomas and Jimmy Mosely had two hits for WL. Jerry Slayton doubled and John Townsley had two hits for the Radio Men.
July 1 — Obion held off Dixie 10-9 to win the Obion County Little League Tournament championship. Obion built a 10-3 lead and then weathered a Dixie rally in the sixth inning. Vince Thompson was the winning pitcher with relief help from Russell Barker and Jason Lyons. Scotty Warner took the loss. Brad Walton ripped a grand slam and double, and Shane Anderson doubled for Obion. Ronnie Jackson had two hits, Roy Logan doubled and singled, and Warner, Timmy Floyd, David Rhamey and Scott Northam all doubled for Dixie.

June 29 — Doctors Park ran its two-year unbeaten streak to 37 games by sweeping the regular season and postseason tournament titles in the Kiwanis Softball Middle League. Members of the team are Macey Lee, Virginia Hill, Samantha Dodd, Allison Robinson, Dawn Sherwood, Amanda Forbus, Dawn Doughten, Valerie Bransford, Tyneshia Fountain, Crystal Fuzzell, Julie Kinkaide, Andrea Greer and Sabrina Rupert.
July 1 — The foursome of Bill Burnett, David Barham, Kevin Little and Ken Courtright won the weekly Poplar Meadows County Club four-man scramble. The team shot an 8-under 28, winning the event by one stroke over the foursome of Bob Regen, Jerry Regan, Jerry Kendall and Scott Critchlow.

June 28 — Fulton High School is again looking for a boys’ basketball coach after Michael Hensley left for a job closer to his home in Cloverport. Hensley replaced Sam Miller and had been on the job one week. In other Fulton prep athletics, Pete Morgan was put in charge of cross country, Laurie Atwill has been selected the new softball coach and the school announced it is adding volleyball and dropping tennis.
July 2 — Will Townes tagged a two-out RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to lift Union City past Paris-Henry County 10-9 in the 11-12-year-old Little League Area Tournament. Brett White tied the game with a three-run homer. Craig Lowrance homered, Colton Speed had four hits, Camron Sherwood added three hits and Brandon Petty had two safeties for UC. Sherwood was the winning pitcher in relief of Speed, striking out eight.

June 30 — With a doubleheader sweep of Sikeston, the Union City Greyhounds ran their win streak to five games and ended the first half of the season in second place — one game behind Fulton — in the Kitty League standings with a 15-10 record. Alex Berry and Ben Rowland pitched well in UC’s 5-0 and 12-1 win. Blake McDade homered for Union City in the opener.
July 2 — Eric Knott accepted the position of football head coach at Dresden High School, leaving the staff of Obion County Central. Knott had been hired as the offensive coordinator and line coach in the spring by new Rebel head coach Jason Driggers. Knott will replace Craig Rogers, who has been hired as one of two assistant principals at Obion Central.

June 28 — Several local runners fared well in the sixth annual White Squirrel 5K in Kenton. Daniel Williamson was the overall winner with a time of 18:18, Drew Crews was second in the boys’ run, while Nicole Storey was first and Kris Storey placed second in the girls’ run.
June 30 — The Union City Junior Babe Ruth League closed its season and named its annual award winners for their efforts in 2011. Camden Napper was selected the L.H. Ladd Sportsmanship Award, Jamie Hyde was tabbed the Jim Cawley Mr. Hustle winner and Kane Taylor was voted Most Improved. Published in The Messenger 6.28.12
