| Local hunters can hear Rutledge |

The West Tennessee chapter of the Quality Deer Management is planning a “Hunters Night Out” for local deer hunters.
The event is scheduled for July 14 at Westview High School in Martin.
Noted outdoorsman Alex Rutledge — who hosts his own satellite television show “Bloodline” on the Pursuit Channel — will be the special guest and answer outdoor questions of those in attendance.
A full night of games and raffles await those who attend. Organizers say 10 guns will be given away and an auction and silent auction will be held.
A barbecue meal will be served for a cost of $10. Only 200 meals will be prepared, so those interested are encouraged to call 235-3781 to reserve a ticket.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with the meal to be served at 6:30 and the activities to follow.
WTQDMA Chapter President Larry Porter is obviously excited about the upcoming event.
“Our West Tennessee chapter was the first QDMA chapter in Tennessee and we are trying to get the word out about ways to improve deer hunting in our area,” he said.
“We want to invite anybody interested in deer hunting to come to our Hunters Night Out.
“We want this to be a fun family night out and for every young hunter to go home with a prize and have a good time.”
Porter explained the goal of his group when asked the mission of QDMA.
“QDMA is a national organization that helps individuals manage deer on their own property with a goal of growing bigger bucks and managing their herd,” he explained. “Some states have been doing this for years and have proven the benefits of QDMA.
“West Tennessee is capable of growing bigger bucks. The biggest thing that we can do differently in West Tennessee is let the bucks grow older. If we let our deer reach the age 41⁄2 or even 51⁄2 years old, then you will see a big difference in their antler growth.
“Most deer killed in West Tennessee are 21⁄2 years old or younger, according to our TWRA. Foodplots are very helpful to our deer at certain times of the year when food is not readily available.
“There are other ways to help supplement our deer.”
Porter said his organization has room for other sponsors, vendors and especially helpers for this year’s Hunters Night Out activities.
“We are expecting a big crowd so people need to call ahead and get their tickets,” he insisted.
