TANKED
TANKED
Discovery Park agent Hugh Wade (right) talked with David Ursery as he delivered a completed restored military tank Tuesday afternoon. Ursery has spent the past two months restoring the Model FV101 Scorpion combat vehicle reconnaissance CVRT. The military vehicle will be put on display at the Discovery Park of America. The vehicle was built in 1980 by Alvis Vehicle Ltd. of Thetford, England, and was made for the Belgium government. The CVRT is powered by a Jaguar J60 six-cylinder gas engine and is one of only 313 manufactured for the Belgium government. The military tank is operated using a three man crew — a commander, driver and a gunner. The unit is made of ballistics aluminum and weighs only 1,780 pounds, has a ground pressure of five pounds per square foot, is 17 feet four inches long, seven feet wide and six feet 10 inches tall. The vehicle has a maximum speed of 50 miles per hour and can accelerate from zero to 30 miles per hour in 16 seconds. As far as its armaments, the CVRT has a 7.62 millimeter coaxial machine gun and carries 3,000 rounds. The Scorpion also has two multi-barreled smoke grenade dischargers on each side of the turret. The main armament has an elevation of 35 degrees and 10 degrees of depression with a full 360-degree traverse. The vehicle was purchase from an individual surplus vehicle dealer in Michigan.
