The Messenger 06.18.12

MEMPHIS — The Children’s Museum of Memphis is now taking registrations for its all-new discovery camps lead by their very own museum educators and staff.
Experienced guest speakers and artists will be on hand for each camp to complement the weekly curriculums. It’s offering these innovative camps to open a whole new world of learning in a safe, fun-packed, hands-on environment for only $100 per week.
Camps will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. — except for My 1st Classroom, which will meet from 9a.m. to 3 p.m. — every Monday through Friday through Aug. 10 and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants will find something for everyone in these fun-packed escapades.
Camp descriptions are as follows. Space is limited. Lunches and snacks are provided daily. Call (901) 458-2678, ext. 221 to enroll.
• June 25-29 — Camp Golden Rules for ages 4-10
The museum is helping children win the “Kind Kid” award by using the classic story of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” to teach the importance of proper leadership and social skills. This camp will surely build confidence and encourage more courteous everyday behavior in children as they learn the importance of good-old fashioned manners through storytelling and role-playing. A great camp for boys and girls.
• July 2-6 — Around the World Art Camp for ages 6-10
The museum is taking a tour around the world in just five days and creating wonderful works of art inspired by several cultures and their unique traditions. Participants can be sure they’ll will trek across every continent. Don’t get left behind.
• July 9-13 — Anatomy Academy for ages 4-10 years
Participants will be rolling up their lab coat sleeves and pulling out the stethoscopes, as they transform into human body detectives. Campers will explore the cool, yucky and gross mysteries of the human body in this exciting and entertaining camp. Let the exploring begin.
• July 16-20 — GAME ON!!! Sports Camp for ages 5 to 10 years
No couch potatoes allowed. Girls and boys will kick, dribble and batter-up into a better understanding of the basic fundamentals of traditional sports like basketball, volleyball and baseball. Some will explore new grounds too as they try their hand at cricket, golf and rugby. Special guest coaches and players will stop by to share expert tips.
• July 23-27 — Backyard Birds and Butterflies Adventure Camp for ages 4 to 10 years
Join in the fun as they hike the grounds of the campus to record, photograph and study the life-cycles of birds, butterflies, frogs and insects in their natural habitats. Find out the job of the museum’s very own beekeeper. Participants will become ecologists and entomologists as they keep daily picture journals of their studies and finds. They’ll create souvenir DVDs to take home from their discoveries.
• July 30-Aug. 4 — Center Stage Theatre Camp for ages 5-10
Children will learn that there is more to a production than just acting. Campers will participate in the process of creating a play from writing the script, improvisation, directing and marketing. Local artists will be on hand to share personal stories and ideas as the campers create their own mini-production to perform before a visiting audience.
• Aug. 6-10 — My First Classroom for age 3 to 4
So the older children are excited about returning to school. They’ll join in the excitement as the younger children go to school, too. This camp will help pre-schoolers prepare for “real” school. Campers will have subjects in math, reading and science, just like “big” school, but tailored to meet the needs of pre-school learning. Ring the bell, schools about to start.
