Hutch's Hit List — Hitman tune a timeless hit for all ears

Somewhere, Roseanne Barr is humming.
If in fact “the opera ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings” — an often-repeated sports maxim — Barr and the orchestra had better be tuning up.
The Hitman’s silver-oldie quest for a 25th consecutive season of eclipsing the once-considered-elusive .800 mark is all but a worn-out hit with just two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Following last week’s 22-3 (.880) showing, the game’s greatest gridiron guru currently stands at .863 (190-30) — sweet harmony that would translate to a Top 5 standing all-time and not far from last season’s best-ever .881 mark.
Hoping himself to hit a few more high notes, the smooth-sounding sensational sideline soothsayer offers up another recording of an all-time favorite that critics swear sounds like a broken record,
Hopefully, it will never be off-key.

UNION CITY AT SOUTH FULTON — Be it the recently-born rivalry, the possible postseason implications for either and/or both teams, or the Devils’ ill will over the fact that two of their better players have transferred to UCHS the past couple of years, this one should be emotionally-charged. Both have fallen short of preseason goals and expectations, yet each could still get into the playoffs and would enhance that possibility with a win here. The Twisters are actually the more desperate of the two and must somehow wave a magic wand to make their tackling and ball-security woes vanish to have a chance. SF, meanwhile, has been forced to play musical chairs with a roster decimated by injuries and must Band-Aid those hurts to stand up to what is expected to be a physical onslaught by the Purple and Gold. While the Hitman is proud of his South Fulton heritage and even more so that his grandfather Leon was a QB on the only team to beat the Twisters in 1922, seeing things with Big Red goggles on has never figured into this task. So, be it a “can’t-win” situation or a “can’t-lose,” the call is — UNION CITY.
OBION CENTRAL AT HAYWOOD — The Rebels will look to get the bad taste out of their mouths from last week’s loss to Covington that ruined a perfect season and likely any chance OC had at the District 13AA championship. Head coach Shawn Jackson probably won’t make it to the planned palate-cleansing as he continues to address his health issues, and his absence really shouldn’t be a factor if Central shows up hungry to get back on track. The once-proud Haywood program has been more feast than famine over a century’s worth of good football, but has been reduced to nothing more than scraps for opposition this year who’ve regularly chewed up and spit out the Tomcats on a weekly basis. Sounds like a made-to-order helping of the age-old recipe that is sure to satisfy any lingering Rebel pang. — OBION CENTRAL.
LAKE CO. AT HUMBOLDT — Falcon skipper David Barger — himself playing with pain and with Achilles tendon surgery pending — might want to get a little help from his wife, Dawn, the LC boys’ basketball coach who beat a more talented H’boldt squad a couple of times in tournament play to lead the Falcons to the state title. Unfortunately for the Hitman’s good buddy, Mrs. Barger isn’t sharing her secret. — HUMBOLDT.
