Local schools accept healthy ‘Challenge’
Two schools in the Obion County School System are award winners for having accepted a healthy “Challenge.”
The HealthierUS School Challenge has announced two new award winners from Obion County — Lake Road Elementary School and South Fulton Elementary School.
The HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize those schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through promotion of nutrition and physical activity.
Since the beginning of the effort, awards have been given to schools in 44 states. Only 1,504 schools in the entire United States are certified.
The two local schools were approved at the bronze award level for a certification period of July 2011 to July 2015.
“We, as well as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, would like to commend these schools for the exemplary steps, leadership and team work employed to make changes to their schools’ nutrition environment, improve the quality of the foods served, provide students with more nutritious, healthy choices, and enhance their physical activity program,” said Sarah White, state director of the School Nutrition Program, Division of Resources & Support Ser-vices, for the Tennessee Department of Education.
To acknowledge their achievement, the schools will each receive a HUSSC award plaque, a banner to display and a $500 monetary award for the bronze award. Plus, the names of the schools will be added to the HUSSC awardees list on the Team Nutrition HUSSC website.
“Congratulations, Obion County,” Ms. White added.
