G’field mourns Schlicht

The Greenfield community is in mourning the loss of former coach Shane Schlicht.
The 38-year-old died Sunday after he suffered a brain aneurysm. Schlicht had battled through numerous health issues the past few years.
Schlicht — a 1996 Freed-Hardeman graduate — was the junior high football skipper at G’field from 1998-2002. He also served as the school’s baseball skipper during that time and assisted on the high school gridiron, while also making contributions as a girls’ junior high basketball coach.
At the high school level, Schlicht was Greenfield’s offensive coordinator for two seasons (2001-02).
“He was an oustanding coach,” said Jackie Vaughn, the Greenfield School principal during Schlicht’s tenure. “The thing that stands out to me the most is his charisma and how the kids enjoyed being around him. He was always upbeat and a wonderful person to be around.
“We loved him and he’ll be missed.”
Following his G’field stint, Schlicht had coaching stints at St. Joseph High School in Greenville, Miss., Jackson Central-Merry and Haywood.
He also worked for a spell at a car dealership in Jackson after his return from to the area.
Schlicht was forced to take a medical leave from Haywood in 2009.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and two sons, Hayden and Cameron.
