ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Memphis guard Antonio Barton hit a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left in the game to give Memphis a 63-62 comeback win over Central Florida Wednesday night.
The Tigers led by two at halftime, but overcame a seven-point second-half deficit to secure the Conference USA road win.
The victory gave Memphis (18-6, 6-3) a 2-0 win in the season series and extended its overall winning streak over the Knights to 10-0.
Will Barton led four Tigers in double figures with 15 points, followed by Antonio Barton with 14.
Tarik Black added 11 points and Will Coleman 10.
UCF (14-8, 1-8) suffered its eighth straight loss. The Knights were led by Isaac Sosa’s 14 points and 12 from Marcus Jordan.
Memphis rode a 19-point halftime lead to a win over UCF last month, but the Tigers led only 32-30 at intermission on Wednesday.
UCF opened the second half with a 17-8 run — which included four 3-pointers — to take a 47-40 advantage with 11:55 to play in the game.
A UCF turnover, followed by a free-throw by Black pulled the Tigers to within two, 53-51, at the 8:41 mark. UCF increased its edge to 60-55 before the Tigers closed within three, 60-57, on a fast break dunk by Black with 4:48 to play.
Will Barton tied it at 60 on a 3-pointer and was fouled by UCF’s P.J. Gaynor with 59.5 seconds to play, but failed to convert on the ensuing free throw.
Jordan put the Knights back up by two with 40.8 seconds to play on a driving layup to set up Memphis’ final shot.
In the first half, the Tigers looked ripe to be upset by the Knights.
Will Coleman was strong for Memphis underneath with eight first-half points.
The Tigers never really got their offense going early, though, thanks to nine turnovers.
The Knights had only four giveaways in the half and used their quickness on the perimeter to get some layups out of their half-court sets. They also got a boost from the return of point guard A.J. Rompza, who had missed the previous two games with a sore left foot.
A Coleman dunk gave the Tigers their biggest first-half lead at 32-23 with 3:17 left to play. But UCF ended the half on a 7-0 spurt, capped by a Keith Clanton 3-pointer to stay within striking distance.
Clanton led the Knights with seven points in the half, followed by Sosa with six.
