Little time left to impact season
Little time left to impact season | Greenfield Yellowjackets, Chase Smith, Steven Sawyers, Gleason Bulldogs, Austin Powell, Blake Taylor,

Race to the finish — The Gleason Bulldogs and Greenfield Yellowjackets, including (from left) Greenfield’s Chase Smith and Steven Sawyers and Bulldogs Austin Powell and Blake Taylor, are both sprinting toward the end of their respective 2010 seasons.
With only two games left in the 2010 regular season, three Weakley County teams are trying to improve their standings.
The Westview Chargers currently sit at the top of the District 13-2A heap. The Chargers will try to stay there with a win in their final home game. Westview (5-3, 4-0) will entertain the Haywood Tomcats with kickoff at 7:30 on Friday night at Graham Stadium.
Led by running back Terry Grandberry, Haywood comes into the game with a .500 record (4-4), but is only 1-3 against district opponents. After winning three out of four games in the middle of the season, the Tomcats have lost their last two, including a 48-27 loss to Ripley last week.
Ripley effectively mixed the run and the pass in the win over the Tomcats. Haywood gave up more than 500 yards of offense — 205 on the ground and 298 passing yards.
The Chargers, coming off a hard-fought 31-21 road win over Obion County’s Rebels, are also capable of mixing Tanner  Spencer passes with runs by Abraham Haddad and fullbacks Wyatt Zarecor and Desmond Johnson.
The Chargers are still trying to improve their standing in the Class 3A playoffs. As things stand heading into Week 9, Westview will have to travel on the opening Friday night of the playoffs despite leading its district.
The Greenfield Yellowjackets will travel to Halls to take on the Tigers (2-6, 0-4) with kickoff at 7 Friday evening. The Jackets (2-6, 1-3) will be looking for their second District 14-A win of the season. Greenfield picked up a 13-12 district win over South Fulton in Week 3.
Against Halls, the Jacket defense will try to stop the Tigers spread passing attack. The Tigers have lost six games in a row, including a 33-19 loss to Gleason in Week 3.
The Tiger defense has been porous, allowing 35 points per contest on the season and 49 points in each of its last two losses.
Halls’ two wins came in their first two outings of the season back in August. The Tigers nipped Tipton-Rosemark, 21-20, and topped Scotts Hill, 20-14.
Speaking of Scotts Hill, the host Lions will entertain the visiting Gleason Bulldogs with kickoff at 7:30 on Friday night.
Scotts Hill (1-7, 0-4 District 15-A) has had a week to prepare for the Bulldogs, coming off an open date. The last time the Lions were on the field, they dropped a 30-7 decision to West Carroll. The lone Scotts Hill victory on the season came over Middleton, 23-13.
Gleason (3-5, 0-4 District 13-A) is coming off a 48-14 loss to Huntingdon. The Bulldogs still have a shot at finishing with a .500 record for the 2010 season, but they’ll have to stop Scotts Hill this week and rival Dresden next week to avoid a losing season.
Speaking of Dresden, the Lions (7-2, 2-2 District 13-A) from the county seat will enjoy a much-deserved week off before preparing for the playoffs with their regular-season finale on the road at Gleason.
