As parents of Weakley County students hit the clothing stores in the next few weeks to outfit their children for the upcoming fall school year, they will spend more time ensuring those clothes adhere to the new standardized dress code policy that will take effect the day the school session begins.
This year, unlike in years past, offers a more cohesive style of dress for children entering junior and high school grades in Weakley County with the placement of the new dress code.
Weakley County Director for Safe and Drug Free Schools Lorna Benson shed some light on potential questions posed by parents in the coming weeks.
According to the updated dress code, which only applies to middle and high school students, children are allowed to wear shirts in any solid color, with a collar and sleeves.
“Polo shirts are only one example of the approved style of shirts in the new dress code. Students can wear button-up shirts also, as long they are solid in color,” Benson explained.
Turtleneck and mock turtleneck shirts can also be worn as an undergarment. The shirts can bear a small logo or design that is no larger than a business card.
Benson said the school system understands that name-brand jeans will have embroidery on the pockets of the jeans. The dress code does not allow, however, embellishments, patches, appliques, sequins or other decorations on jeans.
Students will be required to tuck their shirts in and wear belts.
Capri pants, shorts, skirts and jumpers in one of the following colors – khaki, black, brown, denim, olive, stone or navy – are also acceptable.
Solid-colored sweaters are also considered acceptable attire, under the new dress code.
Sandals, loafers, tennis shoes and boots will be accepted. Flip flops and house shoes are not acceptable.
Socks must be a solid color and must be a matching pair. White socks are acceptable.
Under the new dress code, hats, toboggans, bandannas, scarves, sweatbands, stocking caps, hair rollers or combs, will not be considered acceptable in the school building.
Ear piercing, a maximum of two per ear, is the only form of acceptable displayed piercing, under the new dress code policy.
The policy in its entirety, can be found on the Weakley County school system’s website at www.weakleycountyschools.com.
Just in time for back to school shopping, the state will once again host a Tax-Free weekend for all school supplies and clothing from Aug. 6 through Aug. 8.
