Weakley County commissioners approved the fiscal year budget for 2010-11 during a meeting held Monday evening at the county courthouse.
The budget approval came without an increase in property tax rates, which remains at $2.0616 for each $100 of assessed property value.
The property taxes will be distributed among the county’s departments as follows:
• County General Fund – $0.46
• Highway Fund – $0.16
• General Purpose School Fund – $0.74
• Capital Projects Fund – $0.02
• Debt Service Fund – $0.6816
The approved $53-million-plus budget for the county was divided among the various departments. They include:
• County General Fund – $8,005,190;
• Solid Waste Fund – $29,644;
• Drug Control Fund – $81,830;
• Highway Fund – $4,416,973;
• General Purpose School Fund – $30,283,166;
• Central Cafeteria Fund – $2,427,165;
• School Federal Projects Fund – $3,089,559

Included in this year’s fiscal budget for the county is a one-time bonus for all full-time county employees for $400. Part-time employees, who work a minimum of 25 hours each week, will receive a $300 bonus. Employees must have been employed by the county by Nov. 1, 2009.
County employees can expect to receive their bonus around Nov. 23 of this year.
A one percent salary increase for certified teachers in the county is reflected in the fiscal year’s county budget. The budget also reflects a $4,500 raise for Weakley County Director of Schools Randy Frazier. Frazier’s salary increased from $91,600 to $96,100.
During a recent county committee meeting, Frazier told board members the school system anticipates savings with the change out of lighting in the gymnasiums in the schools to help offset the teacher salary increases.
The county commission approved the following non-charitable contributions for the fiscal year:
• $5,000 each for the Como/Ore Springs, Palmersville, Sidonia, Pillowville and Latham volunteer fire departments;
• $5,500 for the Weakley County Rescue Squad;
• $2,500 to the Weakley County Carl Perkins Center for the Prevention of Child Abuse;
• $45,714 for Weakley County libraries;
• $22,000 for the Weakley County Chamber of Commerce;
• $3,542 for the Northwest Tennessee Development District;
• $4,322 for the Northwest Tennessee Human Resource department;
• $96,800 for the Joint Economic and Community Development Board;
• $6,000 for the Reading Railroad.
In other news, commissioners recognized District 7 Commissioner Mac Buckley for his 16 years of service as a commissioner in District 7.
Buckley serves as Chairman Pro Temp for the county commission.
He has served as chairman of the Nursing Home Committee; vice-chairman of the Health, Education and Economic Development Committee and as member of the Rules Committee.
Buckley was an educator for more than 42 years as a teacher, coach, principal and for eight years as a superintendent of the Weakley County School System from 1970 through 1978.
Buckley served in the South Pacific for three years during World War II as a United States Marine.
He plans to retire this year and will not seek re-election for a fifth term.
