VBS slated
Vacation Bible School, with the theme “Go back in time … Take a journey with Jesus,” will be Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at Troy’s Blessed Hope Baptist Church at 126 North Maple St. children can meet and talk to Bible characters, enjoy stories told with puppets as they wind their way through the greatest story ever told and share lunch and craft time.
The Rev. Terry Council is pastor.

Music program set
A free concert, “Yesterday Once More: A Tribute to The Carpenters,” is planned for 2:30 p.m. Sunday at St. James Episcopal Church at 422 East Church St. in Union City.
Kim French will provide a walk down memory lane by recalling some of The Carpenters’ greatest hits and utilizing a pictographic backdrop. The public is invited to attend.

New study to begin
Grace Community Church in Union City will begin a 10-part video and discussion series on the history and theology of Calvinism starting Wednesday night. The study is titled “Amazing Grace,” and will feature R.C. Sproul, Dr. James Kennedy and other leading theologians and ministers.
“The purpose of this study is to help others better understand Reformed theology,” said the Rev. Billy McGarity. “As such, it focuses on the doctrines of grace and how that grace is applied in the salvation of sinners.”
Topics include total depravity, unconditional election, limited atonement, irresistible grace and perseverance of the saints.
“The great Baptist preacher Charles Spurgeon once said, ‘To deny Calvinism is to deny the gospel of Christ,’” said McGarity. “Unfortunately, many of us have forgotten much about our own Protestant heritage.”
The Wednesday night study begins at 6:30. Bible classes for children are also provided.
Grace Community Church is a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) and meets at 1215 South Home St. in Union City, near Walgreens. The public is welcome.

To serve pancakes
South Fulton United Methodist Church, located on Orchard Drive, will be serving an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast Saturday from 7-11 a.m.
Donations will be accepted.

Prayer session planned
Union City First Baptist Church will begin a monthly prayer session in the old sanctuary at 500 East Church St. Sunday at 9:15 a.m., prior to the beginning of Sunday school. This month’s topic will be “Unity and Christ-like Attitudes.”
The Rev. Gary Williams, former minister of education at Union City First Baptist Church, will deliver the message at the church Sunday and on Aug. 8. Morning worship is at 10:45, with evening worship at 6.
The community is invited to attend.

To provide fish
PEOC Ministry, located at 1304 East Main St. in Union City, will be selling catfish and buffalo fish plates Friday. The menu will include fish, white beans, cole slaw, bread, dessert and drink for $6.

Homecoming Day set
Hornbeak Baptist Church will be observing Homecoming Day on Aug. 8.
 Former pastor the Rev. Kenneth Basham will be the guest speaker during the morning worship service. A potluck luncheon and an afternoon singing will begin around 1:30 and will feature the gospel group Masters Call from Oakfield Baptist Church.
There will be no evening service.

Soul Food Café slated
Exchange Street Church of Christ in Union City will host Soul Food Café Wednesday 5:30-8 p.m.
The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs and all the trimming, along with dessert. The meal is free.
The theme will be “back-to-school” and there will be plenty of activities for the children. School supplies will be handed out to all school-aged children who attend, while supplies last.
