Drug shippers must be licensed by state board
Shelley Walker, spokesman for the Tennessee Department of Health, advises the public that prescription drug purveyors must be licensed. “Any pharmacy shipping prescription drugs to Tennessee is required to be licensed by the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy,” she said. Advertisements by Internet “drug stores” tell prospective buyers all they have to do to get drugs delivered right to their door is fill out a form online answering questions about medical problems and the drugs desired. A company doctor reviews the form, writes a prescription and the drugs are delivered — for a premium price, of course. “If a company is shipping medication to someone in Tennessee and that company is not licensed by the Tennessee Board of Pharmacy, that company is violating state law.” Ms. Walker said the state Department of Health works with several state and federal agencies — including the FBI, Food and Drug Administration and the Drug Enforcement Agency — in investigating and prosecuting violators.
