G’field girls end tourney prep by downing DHS
G’field girls end tourney prep by downing DHS | Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets, Dresden Lady Lions, Courtney McMillin, Jordan Galey, Dresden Lions, Matt Beaty, Tyler McPeak, Wes Clark, Greenfield Yellowjackets

Up and over — Dresden’s Matt Beaty soars in the paint for a shot between Yellowjackets (from left) Dalton Potts and Graham Perkins during non-district action between the county rivals Thursday night. Dresden was the victor. Photo by Sara Reid
In a make-up snow game against their next-door neighbors, the Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets left little doubt that they are gearing up for the district tournament. Rolling out to a big lead early, they took care of the Dresden Lady Lions, 59-33, in a non-district but highly-anticipated match-up this past Thursday night in Greenfield. The Dresden boys hit free throws down the stretch to hold off the Jackets, 63-50. Katie McCall opened the girls game with a layup, but Amy Reddick was ready with a 3-ball to give Dresden an early 3-2 edge. Meagan Porter guided the hosts to a 9-3 edge with a pair from downtown. With Greenfield hammering the boards and Jordan Galey lighting the scoreboard for nine points, the Lady Jackets held a 19-9 lead after one quarter. Four straight points from Galey shot the GHS lead to 23-9 in the second. Courtney McMillin broke the streak with two free throws and Alex Glisson knocked in a jumper to shrink the lead to 10, but McCall hit from beyond the arc and Emily Randolph scored inside to double up on the visitors, 32-16, at the half. McMillin nailed a jumper to start the third, but McCall and Mallory Robinson each recorded a trey to increase the GHS lead to 38-18. Galey completed a 3-point play to push the score to 41-18. Jessica Jones hit from downtown for Dresden and McMillin added two freebies, but the Lady Jackets led 47-23 after three. Jesica Parsley scored six and Jones added four in the final quarter, but Greenfield’s bench finished the job and the home team ran away with a 59-33 win. Galey led all scorers with 22 points, while McCall added 16. Parsley and Jones each had seven for DHS. The Lion boys kept it from being a sweep as they overcame Greenfield scoring spurts and closed out the game with free throws to come out on top, 63-50. With two from Heath Crouse and three from Wes Clark, Greenfield ran out to a 5-0 lead. Tyler McPeak put up four inside for Dresden, but Clark hit another three and Greenfield led 10-4. Graham Perkins scored inside for the Jackets and the lead stood at 12-5. The Lions used a 6-0 run to pull within a single point, 12-11, but Crouse hit two from the line and Greenfield held a 16-13 lead after a quarter. Dresden’s Matt Beaty made good on a 3-point play for a 16-all tie. Clark answered with a three and Jess Castleman hit two free throws to swell the lead to 21-16. Daniel Harris’ layup cut the lead to three, 21-18, but with four minutes left in the half, Castleman increased it to seven with a reverse layup. McPeak completed a 3-point play to fuel a Lion run. Alex Robinson and Dillon Matlock added the spark to give DHS a 32-28 edge at the half. Matlock hit a three to start the third and the lead grew to 10, 38-28. Perkins, Clark and Crouse brought the home team back to within a point, 38-37, but Dresden closed out the third quarter with a McPeak 3-point play and a 46-39 lead. The Lions continued to maintain the advantage in the fourth and put the game out of reach with bonus free throws to win, 63-50. Both Matlock and McPeak led Dresden with 16 points each. Robinson and Harris scored 10. Clark was high scorer for GHS with 27 and Crouse put up 10.
