Third-quarter intensity elevates Lady Chargers
Third-quarter intensity elevates Lady Chargers | Westview Lady Chargers, Dyersburg Lady Trojans, Martin, Winn Decker, Breanna Pitcher, Tennessee

For the second game in a row, the Westview Lady Chargers enjoyed a third-quarter surge. The difference was the outburst lifted the Westview girls to a 51-39 victory over the visiting Dyersburg Lady Trojans Tuesday night in Martin.
The Westview boys struggled, falling 61-46 to the Trojans.
After fighting back into contention with a post-halftime eruption against defending state champion Gibson County last Friday night, Westview scored more points in the third quarter against Dyersburg than it posted on the scoreboard during the entire first half.
"I challenged them to come out and compete," Lady Charger head coach Sean Stephenson said of his halftime speech.
The first half was marked by multiple turnovers and missed shots by both teams. The teams were unable to find a rhythm in the first quarter. Grace Ann Swaim, who soon after struggled with fouls, added four points as WHS led 9-4 after a frame.
The Lady Chargers' advantage stretched to eight at 14-6 on an Amber Rechis layup mid way through the second quarter, but Dyersburg crashed the boards on both ends and put together a 7-2 run to trail 16-13 at the break.
After halftime both teams were potent offensively. Amber Rechis nailed a 3-pointer for part of her 12 points in the quarter to extend the WHS lead to six at 24-18, but a Jolyta Taylor layup and a trey by Brandi Davis cut the gap back to a single point at the third-quarter mid point.
Jacey Sims nailed a long-range bomb with 39 seconds left in the frame. Westview then tipped away a pass, which led to Rechis at the free-throw line. She hit the first, but was off on the second try. Pitcher chased down the rebound, giving Rechis a chance to drill her third 3-pointer of the quarter just before the buzzer for the first double-digit lead of the game at 36-26.
"Breanna and Jacey both played well tonight. They did a good job of getting involved in the offense," Stephenson said.
Sims added six of her 13 points in the fourth as the Lady Chargers (6-2, 1-1) earned their first District 13-AA win, 51-39.
Rechis topped all scorers with 21 points. Kay Tate's 14 points led Dyersburg (4-4, 1-2).
In the boys game, the Chargers never found a rhythm on offense through the entire game. Compounding their troubles was the effort of Trojan Winn Decker, who burned Westview's defense both from the perimeter and in the paint for 27 points in his team's 61-46 road win.
A three-minute WHS scoring drought didn't help in the first quarter, as Dyersburg carried a 14-9 lead into the second frame.
Twice the Chargers grabbed one-point leads on Javier Gordon layups, but Dyersburg used its fullcourt press to finish the half on an 11-2 run for a 29-21 lead at the intermission.
Westview cut the gap back to three, 32-29, on a 3-pointer by Chris Evans, but got sloppy again and allowed the Trojans to regain the momentum to lead 44-35 after three quarters.
The Chargers again got within three points, 49-46, on a Will Thompson trey with 4:35 left to play. Dyersburg held Westview scoreless the rest of the way, while hitting 8-of-12 free throws to cement the victory, 61-46.
Jacob Lloyd led Westview with 13 points, while Thompson added 10 points.
