As a part of special projects for their classes, the Dresden Elementary art students along with Dresden Middle fifth-grade art students created “care” packages to send to troops stationed in the Middle East. The packages consisted of donated items which included soaps, lotions, sunscreen, candy and stationary. As a special surprise, the Dresden students also sent packets of student class work for military members to share with people in their units. The kindergarten class sent questionnaires about Thanksgiving, first-graders mailed recipes for Thanksgiving dinner and the older children wrote personal letters to the soldiers. At the helm of art teacher Suzie Newbill, the packages arrived last week just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. In a letter issued by email to the students and faculty at Dresden Elementary and Middle schools, SSgt. Brent Armour with the 1138th Military Police Company, said he enjoyed the “wonderful” care packages. “I’ve enjoyed reading the support letters and seeing the children’s Thanksgiving drawings. Thank you so much for taking the time to send these wonderful pictures to me and my soldiers,” Armour wrote. Armour grew up in Sikeston, Mo. where he graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau with a degree in business. He joined the Missouri National guard in 2001 and was deployed to Iraq once before in 2004-05. Armour told the students he volunteered for his current tour in Baghdad, Iraq because some of his friends were being stationed there. “I can tell you that I’ve had a chance to see some things that most people could only dream about. Baghdad, for the most part, really is a pretty place and there’s always something new to see,” Armour added. As a part of the project, 10 “care” packages were mailed to Dresden Elementary students’ family members who are stationed overseas. “The packets are sure to bring a smile to our soldiers during this holiday season,” Newbill commented. Through US Troop Care Package, its Web site lists numerous items that can be sent to troops overseas, which includes toiletries, non-perishable foods and pillows. There is also a special portion of the Web site that allows people to submit troops deployed overseas to receive care packages. Access the site on-line at www.ustroopcarepackage.com. |
