Lions erase big deficit for first win; DHS girls unable to match that feat | Dresden Lady Lions, Amy Reddick, Madison Lady Mustangs, Amber Elmore, Dresden, Tennessee, Hall of Champions, Atwood

Though both Dresden High School squads faced 15-point deficits at the hands of the Madison Academic Mustangs, one team came out with a win and the other a loss this past Saturday in their Hall of Champions games at West Carroll High School in Atwood.
The Lady Lions found themselves trailing by 15 in the fourth and cut the lead to five, but came up short in the end, 49-40. In the second contest, the Mustangs saw a 15-point lead completely erased in the third quarter and the Lions poured it on in the fourth to win, 74-57.
In the girls game, Courtney McMillin opened with a 3-pointer for Dresden, but Tess Sopcack answered with a three for the Lady Mustangs. A layup from Kristen Childress along with a shot from McMillin and a free throw from Jesica Parsley gave the Lions an 8-3 lead. Madison, however, closed out the quarter on a 15-0 run aided by three more trifectas and punctuated by a half-court bomb from Nikki Early to lead 18-8 after one.
Parsley knocked down two from the stripe to cut the Mustang lead to eight, 18-10, but Niketh Love continued Madison’s rainstorm of threes with another triple to increase the lead to 11. Both teams entered the bonus and baskets from Childress and Amy Reddick cut the lead to seven, 21-14. Love knocked down another three and the Lady Mustangs built the lead to 14. Parsley connected on a jump shot in the lane at the buzzer to make the score 30-18 in favor of Madison at the break.
Both squads equaled their point totals in the third and Madison took a 42-28 lead at the end of three.
Dresden opened the fourth with a flurry of points including a three from Parsley to cut the lead to 44-37. A shot from Childress sliced the deficit to five, 44-39. Two free throws from Caroline Carpenter, Madison’s lone scorer in the quarter to that point, put the visitors up 46-39 at the 1:28 mark. Allie Phillips hit one of two from the line, but Madison scored the last three points and held on for the 49-40 win.
Early and Love led the Lady Mustangs with 14 points each. Parsley had 13 for Dresden.
In the second game, Riley Morgan hit one of two from the line to open the first quarter. Tyler McPeak recorded Dresden’s first two points on a layup and put the Lions ahead, 2-1, but Madison scored the next 13 points to go up 14-2. McPeak broke the run with a free throw and Dresden made a run of its own fueled by five points from Dillon Matlock to trail 14-11. The Lions entered the bonus, but Madison rebuilt its lead and entered the second quarter with a 20-11 advantage.
The Mustangs built a 15-point lead midway through the quarter. Four points from Cody Houston and Michael Dilday paced the Lions and with both teams putting up 14 points each, Madison took a 34-25 lead into the break.
After halftime, the Lions came out as a different squad to start the third and nearly scored as many points in the quarter as they’d scored in the entire first half. Taking back the lead with just over a minute remaining, the Lions got eight points from McPeak and seven from Daniel Harris, a 21-8 scoring advantage and a 46-42 lead at the end of three and the pace didn’t slow from there.
As Madison’s defense grew tired of handling Dresden’s inside-outside game, Matt Beaty found himself wide open for several layups in the final quarter. In addition, the Lions’ cannons proved to be accurate from 3-land as they picked up four triples from Matlock, Jacob Vallee, Harris and Gatlin Hatchel to put on a 28-point scoring clinic for the fourth and knocked out the Mustangs, 74-57.
Matlock led the Lions with 14 points. McPeak had 13, Harris scored 11 and Vallee put up 10. Morgan was high scorer for Madison with 20.
