Area Lions Clubs — along with individuals in Obion, Weakley, Henry, Carroll and Lake counties who receive support from Community Developmental Services — are excited about the 53rd Annual Lions Club/Local 6 Telethon of Stars. The telethon will begin at 10 p.m. Saturday and run 15 continuous hours, ending at 1 p.m. Sunday. The show will be broadcast live from the Luther F. Carson Four Rivers Center in downtown Paducah, Ky., and air on WPSD Local 6. Country music act Diamond Rio will headline the event, along with a capella group and local favorite Ball in the House and up-and-coming bluegrass talent the Josh Williams Band. Wendy Brinkley of Union City will represent CDS at the telethon. She was selected because she embodies the essence and character of CDS, according to Karen Lawrence, a case manager at CDS who has known Miss Brinkley the last five years. Miss Brinkley graduated from Obion County Central High School in May 1999 and began working and attending classes at CDS Industries in May 2000. The emphasis at CDS Industries, a sheltered workshop program in Martin administered by CDS, is to acquire and enhance employment skills. CDS is a community-based non-profit organization in Martin that provides support to about 140 adults with developmental disabilities in Weakley, Obion, Henry, Carroll and Lake counties. The agency has participated in the Telethon of Stars since the agency’s inception nearly 40 years ago. The public is asked to support CDS by making donations to the telethon. Donations made from Tennessee stay in Tennessee to support individuals who receive services from CDS. They may be made online at www.TelethonofStars.org or by calling the live donation line during the telethon. Checks, made payable to the Telethon of Stars, may be mailed to BB&T Bank, P.O. Box 1416, Paducah, KY 42002-9941. Members of the public are also invited and encouraged to attend the telethon activities, which are family-friendly and free of charge, according to organizers. For the first time this year, the telethon can also be viewed online via a live stream at www.TelethonofStars.org.
