Camera Studies Still Needed For Dresden Sewer Project
By SARA REID
Staff Writer
An important phase of the Dresden sewer rehabilitation project was recently completed, but, according to Public works director Kerry Cooper, much work remains to be finished.
In the November monthly meeting of the Dresden City Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Cooper reported that the four specific project areas selected for the camera study had been looked at and all the problem areas had been reported from that study; however, the rehab project is far from over as other areas of town will now undergo the camera study.
“We are done with all our camera (work) on those four areas. That’s all we were allowed to camera under our loan. We have turned in the last of the camera work to Ed (Hargraves) for them to look over,” Cooper explained. “We have started this week getting into areas outside of that. I know a lot of people have been confused and thought that after we were done with those four project areas, we were done, but we’re not. We lack a lot of the town and mainly where we’re starting now is the old part of town down here around the square where we think we’ll find a lot of our problems.”
According to Cooper, about one fifth of the town has been profiled with the camera and there are several miles of sewer line left to check.
“We need the okay to go ahead and bid this out to be done by the end of the year,” Cooper said.
“This is an ongoing project. We’re a long way from being done and we’re moving as fast as we can. These are problems that have been going on for years and they’re not going away and we’re paying for them,” Mayor Danny Forrester stated.
To help supplement this continuation, the board passed Delta Regional Authority grant resolution 2008-03. This grant, discussed in earlier board meetings, totals $209,839 with $10,000 of the amount provided by the City of Dresden and will be used for the funding of the sewer rehab improvements.
In other new business, the board voted to donate $50 to the Northwest Tennessee Economic Development Council.
The following ordinances were passed on their first readings:
• Zoning Ordinance 2008-04 to amend the text of the Dresden Zoning Ordinance to exempt additions under 3,000 square feet in the B-3 (highway oriented business) districts from the requirement that a site plan for said addition must be approved by the planning commission.
• Zoning Ordinance 2008-05 to amend the official zoning ordinance of Dresden to allow medical services as a use permitted on appeal in B-3 (highway oriented business), M-1 (light industrial) and M-2 (heavy industrial) districts.
The second readings will be held at 6 p.m. on Nov. 20.
In input from the citizens, Eddie Capps reported that the building constructed by Boy Scout Troop 40 in Maiden Park in 1993 had lost its 100 pound propane tank when it got too hot and “relieved itself” inside the building. The board voted to pay the utility bill for the building and hook up gas to the building.
Weakley County Chamber of Commerce Director Barbara Virgin announced that nominations for Leadership Weakley County will be accepted until tomorrow (Friday). The First State Bank Leadership class has met for two sessions and included in the class are Dresden students Taylor Caldwell, Courtney McMillin, Colleen Perkins, Kaci Robbins and Precious Turbeville.
A grand opening will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Nov. 29 for Tennessee Quality Homecare and Hospice.
The Chamber Christmas party is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the Elks Lodge.
In employee’s reports, interim police chief Brent Perry requested that the board allow the donation of 16 hours of sick leave to an officer needing it. With the request granted, the department will look into taking action for part time or temporary work. Additionally, the City of Dresden is accepting applications and taking recommendations for the position of police chief.
Prior to the board meeting, outgoing Dresden police chief Jerry Wilson was honored with a reception for his 33 years of service.
“I’ve met and worked with a lot of good people over the years,” Wilson said. “I just felt like it was my time to step down. I appreciate everything. It’s been fun.”
In announcements, the city Christmas party will be held on Dec. 3 at the Civic Center immediately following the 6 p.m. December board meeting.
