Several customers of the Union City water department were under a 24-hour boil water order that ended at noon today.
Union City Public Works Director Steve Ladd issued the order at noon Tuesday. It stated that due to a six-inch water line repair, customers in areas of Whispering Hills Subdivision, Shepard Road, Bumpus Road, all of the Crystal community, Mount Olive Road, Old Troy Hickman Road area toward Williams Sausage, Salem Church Road, Burrus Road, Shannon Road, Woodland Mills Road, Woodland Mills area, Maplehurst Subdivision, Garrigan Road, Highway 5, Brevard Road and Andrew Wheeler Road were to boil their water for a period of 24 hours. It included other streets or roads located in the vicinity of the ones listed.
Ladd told The Messenger Tuesday afternoon that a pipe cracked on Salem Church Road in the Rolling Meadows area of Whispering Hills Subdivision. He said a crew was working on the problem as early as 5 a.m. Tuesday.
A 42-foot long section of the pipe had to be replaced. He said it was fixed within a couple of hours.
“Luckily, a boil water order is something we rarely have to do,” he said, adding it was best to use caution and to “make sure everything is safe.”
