Woodland Mills mayor and board of aldermen have passed the proposed budget for the upcoming fiscal year on first reading.
Mayor Wade Carrington said the budget, which was passed Monday night, has no major projects in it. “We’re just trying to survive,” he said.
Included in the proposed budget are revenues and expenditures, respectively, of $70,075 and $65,980 in the general fund, $155,900 and $148,532 in the sewer fund, $10,025 and $10,000 in the street aid fund and $22,420 and $19,900 in the refuse collection fund.
A meeting to have the second and final reading of the budget has been set for 6 p.m. June 29.
Carrington said the city is still looking into the possibility of building a commercial building or convenience store on city property located across Highway 5 from City Hall. He is working with the Jackson architecture firm TLM.
The board was informed Monday night that $2,828 in city property taxes still have not been paid. The property owners will be notified once more by letter before their accounts are turned over to the city attorney.
After the meeting was opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by alderman Waymon Reagan and in prayer by alderman Kirk Snead, the board:
• Agreed to cash out a maturing CD in the general fund.
• Approved financial statements for May, including total assets of $5,410.11 in the refuse collection fund, $11,396.09 in the street aid fund, $574,970.82 in the sewer fund and $64,305.08 in the general fund.
• Heard there are still $40,755 in outstanding bills for the ice storm cleanup.
• Instructed maintenance personnel to install a dead-end street sign at Mount Herman and Cross streets.
• Approved a resolution establishing expenditure thresholds for capital items.
• Heard the city will not get a worker through the summer work program.
• Set July 13 at 6 p.m. as the next regular meeting.
