Dresden woman loses house in fire
A Dresden woman said she is still in shock after a fire last week destroyed her family’s home.
Maureen Campbell Eaton said she went to her garage to close the main door when she discovered smoke and flames emanating from the room last Tuesday afternoon.
“I felt my way along the wall and went out of the garage. Of course I couldn’t see anything and knew that if I fell, I could just roll out,” Eaton said in a phone conversation Monday.
The cause of the fire is still unknown as the Dresden Fire Department continues to investigate the origin of the blaze.
Eaton said she moved into the house on East Main Street in Dresden after her parents passed 11 years ago. The structure was converted from a duplex to one large home shortly after Eaton moved into the residence.
The elderly woman said the structure and her vehicle were a total loss and most of the items in the home were unsalvageable.
She is currently staying with her 85-year-old sister, Aileen, in Sharon.
“We are taking it day by day right now,” Eaton said.
She also commended the Dresden Fire Department and its efforts as well as concerned citizens who walked to her home on Tuesday during the blaze to see if she needed help.
“People came in droves to see if I was o.k. It was amazing to see all of the people who wanted to help. You don’t ever expect a fire, especially not at my age,’ Eaton admitted.
While there has not been a donation fund set up on behalf of the Eaton family, the woman who lost everything in the house fire is slowly trying to rebuild from what little she has left.
For anyone interested in helping, donations can be dropped off at her sister's red brick house on Moore Street in Sharon.
