Rewards for super season piling up for UTM's Hudson
Rewards for super season piling up for UTM's Hudson | Skyhawks, Lester Hudson, 2009 CollegeInsider.com All-American, 2009 NaismithLives.com All-Mid-Major Basketball Team, UT Martin, UTM, Martin, Tennessee

In the spotlight — Skyhawk senior Lester Hudson has etched his name into two more All-American teams. The record-setting guard from Memphis was named to the 2009 CollegeInsider.com All-American team and the 2009 NaismithLives.com All-Mid-Major Team.
Hudson in company as CollegeInsider.com All-American

The University of Tennessee at Martin senior guard Lester Hudson was one of 16 players named to the 2009 CollegeInsider.com All-American team, as the Memphis native continues to rack up the postseason hardware.

Of the 16 All-Americans, Hudson is one of only two players who isn’t from a team featured in a BCS conference. Davidson’s Stephen Curry is the other.

Hudson was an integral part of the Skyhawks’ first-ever Ohio Valley Conference championship this season, leading the team in 20 statistical categories, including scoring, rebounding, steals and blocks.

Hudson led the Skyhawks to their first-ever postseason appearance as a Division I member, an 87-82 loss at Auburn in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. In that game, Hudson capped off his spectacular collegiate career with 33 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists against the SEC school.

The 6-2 guard ended his two-year career with six single-season UT Martin records and three OVC single-season records. His conference records included most points in a season (880 in 2008-09). Hudson wound up just two points shy of becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer, as his 1,727 points trails only Mike Meschede’s (1984-88) career total of 1,729.

Despite playing for only two seasons, Hudson ranks in nine UT Martin career top-10 lists, including being the all-time leader in field goals made and field goals attempted.

Also last week, Hudson was named an Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American selection.

Rather than assembling first, second, third and fourth team squads, the CollegeInsider.com All-America team is one team consisting of 16 players and honorable mentions. Division I coaches and NBA scouts are part of the selection process, but final decision rests with the CollegeInsider.com staff.

The other players named as CollegeInsider.com All-Americans include: Pittsburgh’s DeJuan Blair; Arizona’s Chase Budinger; Curry; Memphis’ Tyreke Evans; Oklahoma’s Blake Griffin; North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough; Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody; Arizona State’s James Harden; Duke’s Gerald Henderson; North Carolina’s Ty Lawson; Marquette’s Jerel McNeal; Wake Forest’s Jeff Teague; Connecticut’s Hasheem Thabeet; Louisville’s Terrence Williams; and Pittsburgh’s Sam Young.

Honorable mentions include: Florida State’s Toney Douglas; VCU’s Eric Maynor; Kentucky’s Jodie Meeks; Saint Mary’s Patrick Mills; and Kentucky’s Patrick Patterson.

Hudson headlines NaismithLives.com All-Mid Major Team

Senior Lester Hudson from the University of Tennessee at Martin headlines the NaismithLives.com All-Mid-Major Basketball Team. NaismithLives.com is one of the web’s hottest basketball sites. Hudson also is a member of the All-American Fifth Team.

Hudson averaged 27.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game on the season. The senior guard led the Skyhawks to a record of 22-10 and a regular season title in the Ohio Valley Conference. He scored at least 30 points in 11 games, including a 42-point, 9-rebound, 6-assist outburst against Tennessee Tech in March.

“Lester Hudson is one of the nation’s most complete guards,” says NaismithLives.com senior writer Adam Stanco, “And his scoring ability rivals that of any player on any level.”

Launched in January of 2008, NaismithLives.com covers all levels of basketball — from high school to the pros. The site features rare insight, great writing and a place for basketball minds to come together to share ideas.

Joining Hudson on the All-Mid Major Team are Eric Maynor, Virginia Commonwealth; Matt Howard, Butler; Ahmad Nivins, St. Joseph’s; and John Bryant, Santa Clara.
