Two out of three ain’t bad.
Both Union City tennis squads came out victorious for the first time this season on Thursday afternoon against Gibson County.
The girls swept GC 7-0, while the local boys were 6-1 victors
However, defending District 14A-AA champion Greenfield was the brick wall that prevented the Obion Countians from a sweep as the OC girls fell 8-0 in a match where the county locals failed to win a point.
During the Central girls’ defeat, reigning 14A-AA singles champion Katie McCall got the Weakley Countians off to a good start after an 8-0 blanking of Samatha Scott.
And the rest of the Yellowjackets followed suit with every match ending with an 8-0 final.
Second seed Jessica Crackel fell to Mallory Robinson, Kacee Sanders was shut out by Melissa McCartney and Natalie Medling bested Lauren Berner.
Otherwise, Hannah Rawls took down Allison Redding and Haley Perkins downed Kacee Warren.
On the doubles side, Crackel and Scott were blanked by McCall and Robinson, while Warren and Sanders fell to McCartney and Medling.
For the Lady Twisters (1-3), top seed Mary Elizabeth Harpole started the afternoon off right with an 8-0 blanking of Merrilee Clark, while No. 2 seed Anna Moore followed suit with a similar shutout of Rebecca Hill.
Doreal Strayhorn and Elizabeth Fuller took 8-2 decisions over Rachel Keltner and Shelby Counce, respectively. Meanwhile, Union City’s fifth seed Tkiara Davis doubled Taylor Eddlemon 8-4.
In girls’ doubles play, Harpole and Fuller downed Clark and Counce 8-2, while Moore and Strayhorn blanked Hill and Keltner 8-0.
On the boys’ side, Philip Wesner was the only casualty of the afternoon as the top Union City boy fell 8-5 to Kaleb Wolfe.
Otherwise, second seed Carlos Fuentes and No. 4 Cameron Graham were victors by respective finals of 8-1 and 8-0 over Corey Scanlon and Hunter Simmons.
Third-seeded Julio Fuentes outlasted Trent Sims 9-8 with a 7-4 tiebreaker triumph and No. 5 Will Regan got an easy win from the fifth seed’s spot by way of forfeit.
In doubles play, Wesner and Dustin Scott edged Wolfe and Scanlon 8-6, while Carlos Fuentes and Graham blanked Sims and Simmons 8-0 to help the UC boys (1-3) to the victory.
The Union City tennis teams return to action on Monday with another home match against Gibson County. Meanwhile, OC travels to Trenton the same afternoon.
