Twister boys come close; UC girls swept

The Union City boys came oh-so-close to victory on Monday afternoon.

With the score of their match with Milan 3-2 heading into doubles, the locals needed both tandem matches to go in their favor.

Unfortunately, the top doubles team of Philip Wesner and Dustin Scott was upended 8-5 by Clint Bradley and Daniel Lorum to clinch the overall victory for the Bulldogs.

For what its worth, UC came out victorious in the other duos match as Carlos Fuentes and Cameron Graham combined to down Larry Robinson and Luke Gardner 8-6.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Twisters also fell to 0-3 as a team on the campaign after a 7-0 blanking.

During the boys’ near miss, Graham was also a winner in singles play, downing Gardner 8-5, while No. 5 Twister Will Regan was an 8-5 victor over Jordan Bratcher.

Other singles play for the guys had top UC boy Wesner and second seed Carlos Fuentes both doubled 8-4 by Bradley and Lorum, respectively. Otherwise, Julio Fuentes lost 8-3 to Larry Robinson in the battle of No. 3 seeds.

For the Lady Twisters, fourth-seeded Elizabeth Fuller came closest to individual triumph in an 8-4 defeat to Kayla Hernandez.

Top seed Mary Elizabeth Harpole and No. 3 Doreal Strayhorn fell by similar 8-1 final tallies to Kristen Garcia and Betty Kay Stinson, respectively.

Hannah Watson bettered Union City’s second seed Anna Moore 8-2, while Tkiara Davis fell by a like final to Jasmina Alagic.

In girls’ doubles play, Moore and Strayhorn were downed 8-3 by Hernandez and Stinson, while Alagic and Watson teamed to blank Harpole and Fuller 8-0.

The Union City tennis squads return to action on Thursday afternoon at home against Gibson County.
