| State-ranked Humboldt teams too much for Gleason to handle |

The Humboldt High School basketball teams rolled into Tater Town as state-ranked squads on Tuesday night. The host Gleason Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs did little to knock the visiting Vikings from the rankings.
The No. 10-ranked Lady Vikings built a 14-point lead and then held off a Lady Bulldog rally to earn a 40-37 victory.
In the boys game, the state's top-ranked Class A squad found little opposition among the Bulldogs' ranks. Undefeated Humboldt roared past Gleason for a 95-31 win.
In the girls game, Humboldt used its size and physical play to control the action in the paint, repeatedly grabbing rebounds on both ends to limit Lady Bulldog chances and increase its own opportunities on its offensive end of the court.
When the girls game got under way, the Lady Vikings had trouble finding the range early, notching just four points on a bucket and two free throws from Natasha Davis. Gleason got three points from Jenna Frazier and two points each from Kim Edenfield and Sara Hensley to lead 7-4 after one quarter.
Just two minutes into the second quarter, Frazier picked up her second foul and headed to the bench for the rest of the half. Without her presence inside, Gleason struggled. On Frazier's foul, Davis completed a traditional 3-point play to knot the score at 7-all. In addition to Davis' presence down low, the Lady Vikings got five points from Jerrica Morgan and outscored Gleason 11-2 in the quarter to carry a 15-9 lead into the halftime break.
Back on the court, Frazier scored the first hoop of the third quarter to cut the gap to four, but the Humboldt lead stretched to 14 points thanks to a 12-2 run. Gleason was held scoreless for more than five minutes during that span.
Heading into the fourth, the Lady Vikings enjoyed a 29-17 advantage. Gleason made its comeback by finding open looks from behind the 3-point line, but with 2:24 left, HHS still held a double-digit edge at 37-27. Frazier and Ashley Coble drilled 3-pointers and Edenfield added two free throws to counter a Courtney Norman layup and trim the gap to 39-35 with 70 seconds remaining.
Humboldt got one free throw from Patra Hubbard, but Taylor Stout nailed two charity shots for Gleason for a 40-37 score with 42 seconds remaining.
In those final seconds, the Lady Vikings twice missed the first of one-and-one free-throw opportunities, but Gleason had a missed trey and a turnover in its final two possessions to allow Humboldt to escape with the 40-37 victory.
Davis topped HHS with 13 points, while Frazier and Stout each contributed 12 points to the Gleason total.
In the boys game, the Vikings had 26 points on the scoreboard before the Gleason boys tallied a bucket on Colin Bennett's baseline drive for a layup.
Humboldt led 47-9 at halftime and 72-12 after three quarters on the way to the 95-31 victory.
