A local man faces multiple charges in connection with an alleged incident Saturday night that ended with a fire that gutted a Union City home.
Several charges are pending today against Jeffery Thomas Poole, 44, of Union City, who was airlifted to Regional Medical Center in Memphis for treatment of injuries following an incident that began around 6 p.m. Saturday, according to a Union City Police Department report.
Police were summoned about 6:15 p.m. to Carol Poole’s residence at 729 High St. in reference to a disturbance. Officers spoke with Ms. Poole, 42, and another woman, Deanna Vandyke, 26, of 1810 High School Drive, Union City, who claimed that Jeffery Poole — identified as Ms. Poole’s ex-husband — had pulled a knife on them.
A very short time later, Poole spoke with police dispatch and indicated he was going to set the house on fire and that officers would have to kill him to get him out, police reported. Officers then discovered that the house was, in fact, on fire and neighbors then told police that Poole was lying on the roof of the house.
When the Union City Fire Department arrived to battle the blaze about 6:30, police officers Timothy Kirby, Kyle Kirk and Ben Hudson climbed a ladder to the roof of the house to rescue Poole, since he appeared to be unconscious, according to the report. During rescue efforts, Kirk and Hudson were overcome by smoke and were transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City for treatment.
Poole was also transported to the emergency room of Baptist Memorial Hospital-Union City and then airlifted to Regional Medical Center (the Med) for treatment, police reported.
Ms. Poole told police that Jeffery Poole had entered her house without her consent and immediately pulled a knife on her, stating he was going to kill her, according to the report. Ms. Poole said she attempted to get away and Poole allegedly held the knife to her throat, refusing to let her go. At that point, Ms. Vandyke reportedly came up to the door and Poole allegedly put the knife in his pocket. Ms. Poole said she then attempted to leave again and Poole grabbed her, allegedly again holding the knife to the back of her neck, causing a small cut and not letting her go.
According to the report, Ms. Vandyke tried to assist Ms. Poole and Poole allegedly threatened her with the knife, too. Both Ms. Poole and Ms. Vandyke were able to get away and Poole allegedly went back into the residence.
Police have indicated that warrants for multiple charges will be obtained and will be served upon Poole’s release from medical care.
