Very familiar face takes over Dresden football program
Very familiar face takes over Dresden football program | Dresden High School, Scott Hewett, Eric Knott, Dresden, Tennessee

Lion leader — Coaching veteran Scott Hewett, here watching the Lions in a preseason practice last fall, will take over the head coaching position at Dresden High School vacated by the resignation of Eric Knott, who guided the DHS Lions in the 2007 seaso
The search for a new head coach for the Dresden High School Lions football team didn't have to stray too far from the Weakley County seat.
When all was said and done, Dresden principal Chuck West knew the best candidate for the job was just a few feet away from his desk the entire time.
West made it official on Tuesday by announcing that coaching veteran and DHS assistant principal and athletic director Scott Hewett will take over the gridiron program's helm.
"Coach Hewett will be our next football coach. I remember when he came here 27 years ago," West said. "He's got a lot of experience and I hope, from a transition standpoint, he will help as far as next year. It will certainly make the transition smoother."
Hewett is no stranger to the Lion program. He was the head football coach at Dresden High School from the 1981 season through the 1992 season. During that span he compiled a 66-63 record with six trips to the postseason including a Reelfoot Conference runner-up finish in 1984, a trip to the TSSAA quarterfinals in 1986 and a second round showing at the end of the 1992 campaign.
Following stepping down from the top position after the 1992 season, Hewett has maintained his presence at Dresden as an assistant coach with the program nearly every season since 1992.
"I'm not going in with any unreal expectations. I want to see our team improve from game to game," Hewett said.
The veteran sideline leader takes over a program that has had quite a bit of upheaval over the past year. Following the resignation of long-time head coach Craig Rogers last spring, the Lions were without a head coach until mere weeks before the 2007 preseason was scheduled to begin.
Finally, Greenfield native Eric Knott accepted the head coaching position, the first in his career, on July 9. Knott's Lions opened the 2007 season with a win but struggled from that point on due to injuries, finishing the season with a 1-9 record.
Knott stepped down from the post due to health concerns soon after the season came to a close, leaving the program in limbo once again. Knott has since accepted an assistant coaching position with the South Fulton High School football team.
West said he received lots of applications for the position once the job was posted and a handful of quality candidates were interviewed over time.
Hewett has scheduled his team's spring practice to begin in early May with a scrimmage against Lake County's Falcons to take place on May 15 in Tiptonville.
"As soon as baseball's through, we'll get out there. We're just going to go for a couple of weeks," the new Dresden head man said.
