Skyhawks add transfer to list of soccer signees

Michelle Calmeyn, a 5-10 forward out of Elk Grove Village, Ill., has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the UT Martin soccer program, head coach Phil McNamara has announced.
Calmeyn will have two years of eligibility remaining at UT Martin after transferring in from USC Upstate, a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference in Spartanburg, SC.

UTM shows off new golf venue

Several friends and alumni of the UT Martin golf program gathered recently for a fundraiser dinner at the new Rhodes Golf Center.
Around 100 people took in the sights of the new Rhodes Golf Center and enjoyed fellowship with the Skyhawk golf team, coaching staff and athletic director Phil Dane.

UTM women’s hoops
offering three camps

The UT Martin women’s basketball program will conduct three summer camps.
The Individual Fundamental Camp for girls entering grades K-6 is slated for May 28-31. The camp will run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. the first three days and end at noon on Friday.
Camp fee is $100 per player.

Emily Allen dropped her semifinal match to Mary Sharpe of Haywood in the singles’ bracket, while Kendal Cook and Kalee Kesterson also lost in the semifinals as they dropped their match to Shelbie Hurt and Haley Hurt of Halls in doubles.

Mistakes finish off Dresden

Errors proved to be costly to Dresden as the Lady Lions were eliminated one game after a defensive gem.
The Lady Lions committed two errors in the bottom of the sixth inning on Thursday that helped Bruceton end Dresden’s season in the semifinal of the District 13A Softball Tournament with a 7-6 loss. Dresden was tagged for six errors in the game.

Westview Athletics Director Jeromy Davidson truly has a full plate as the 2012-13 school year winds down.
Davidson is looking to hire head coaching replacements in three sports with the recent resignations of Chad Levister (baseball), Matt Cupples (girls’ soccer) and Chad Johnson (tennis).
While Cupples has accepted a teaching position at UT Martin and Johnson is leaving the education business, Levister simply said, “It’s somebody else’s turn.”

Carr New York-bound for camp with Giants

Derek Carr, the starting signal-caller for the UT Martin football team the last three seasons, has been selected to participate in a mini-camp tryout with the New York Giants over the weekend.
Carr will compete in a series of practices on Friday and Saturday, to earn a spot on the Giants roster. New York finished last season with a 9-7 record under head coach Tom Coughlin, one year after capturing its fourth Super Bowl crown in 2011.

Westview takes spot in finals, regionals

One half of the District 13AA softball tournament championship game is set — and Westview is that half.
The Lady Chargers got a walk-off single from Brooke Morrow with the bases loaded and no one out to break a 2-all tie against Milan and send Westview to the championship game with the 3-2 win.
Westview has not lost in the double-elimination tournament. Westview has beaten Ripley 4-0, Covington 2-0 and now Milan 3-2.

The Chargers will play on in the Region 7 A-AA soccer tournament after beating Union City 6-0 with Fortner scoring the hat trick on the slick soccer field in Martin. Westview will travel to Troy today to take on Obion Central in the quarterfinals.

It was exciting final inning — and a good one for Greenfield.
The Yellowjackets advanced to the double-elimination portion of the District 14A Baseball Tournament with a 2-1 win over Bradford at home Friday.
Greenfield’s momentum did not carry over to Monday, however, as the ’Jackets suffered a 7-0 loss to Union City.

It was hard to tell who had the bigger smiles — the Tennessee Titans’ Delanie Walker and George Wilson or the students at Lake Road Elementary near Union City.
“To see these kids, to see their smiles, hear how loud they cheer when they see us and for them to be so excited about us being here, it’s like nothing I’ve ever been a part of,” beamed Walker, who signed with the Titans as a free agent this offseason after helping the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC Championship and a spot in the Super Bowl last year.

April 28, 1983 — The Westview Chargers dropped to 7-6 on the year after a 16-6 loss to Obion Central with three games left on the season before the district tournament begins. The Chargers held a 4-2 lead before Central scored six in the top of the third for an 8-4 lead. Jeff Morrison went 2-for-5 with one RBI for the Chargers. Mike Johnson had three hits, while Joey Johnson went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in.

Montori Hughes heard his named called on Saturday. Quentin Sims signed his name on Monday.
The UT Martin seniors joined the ranks of the National Football League, Hughes becoming the first Ohio Valley Conference player selected in the 2013 NFL Draft when the Indianapolis Colts traded up to snag the defensive tackle in the fifth round (139th overall) and then Sims signing as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons.

It took awhile for Westview’s soccer game against South Gibson on Tuesday to be decided.

to rep Virgin Islands

Murray State men’s basketball student-athlete Ivan Aska began workouts recently in preparation to play for the Virgin Islands National Team in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation Championship (July 25-30) in Nassau, Bahamas.

None of the skippers at the four Weakley County football-playing institutions can look into a crystal ball and tell what the future ultimately holds.
However, they weren’t naive enough to believe that the recent closure of Union City’s Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company plant wouldn’t have an effect on their programs.
More than 1,800 employees of the company were left without a job last week — or at the very least with the option of having to move and work at another Goodyear factory — when the plant closed.

Bethel baseballers ink 13AA MVP
Though baseball season just finished up at the college level a little over two months ago, Bethel University is still making headlines with its class of signees.
Most recently, the Wildcat baseball team added Dyersburg’s Josh Richards — the 2011 District 13AA Player of the Year — to its latest recruiting class.
Richards served as both an infielder and pitcher for the Trojans during the spring.

Drive north on Derryberry Drive and you will see a new golf practice center for the UTM golf team in its final stages of construction.

Bethel football won't go bowling
The Big River Bowl scheduled in Dyersburg Aug. 27 has been cancelled.
Officials in charge of the bowl were unable to secure an opponent to face the Wildcats in what was to be Bethel’s 2011 season opener.
The Cats will open their season Saturday, Sept. 3 at home against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
It will be the first of five home games in the 10-game schedule.
Bethel head coach Dino Kaklis was disappointed in the cancellation but is looking forward to the upcoming season. Read More ...

NCAA board includes OVCer
Murray State University Director of Athletics Allen Ward has been appointed to the NCAA D-I Awards, Benefits, Expenses and Financial Aid Cabinet and his contract has also been extended with MSU thru 2015.
Ward, who took over as head of Racer athletics on March 30, 2005, gets a one-year extension, which means his contract now runs through June 30, 2015.
His term on the NCAA cabinet starts in September and runs four years.
The Awards, Benefits, Expenses and Financial Aid Cabinet has oversight authority in areas including, Reviewing D-I legislation relating to the principles of awards, benefits, expenses, and financial aid. Read More ...

UTM anglers are a fit near top
The UT Martin bass anglers team continued its recent success as the team finished ninth in a field of 38 teams at the 2011 Boat US Collegiate Bass Fishing Open June 29-30, on Kentucky Lake near Paris Landing State Park.
Eastern Kentucky University claimed the tournament championship for the second year at the Boat US Open, which was presented by Pepsi.
“It was a team tournament rather than the usual individual tournaments,” said Grayson Smith, team president from Clarksville. “Not as good as we were hoping for (the team’s finish) of course, but it’s a great way to keep moving the team in the right direction toward being a tough-to-beat team.” Read More ...

UT Martin kicker latest to watch
Cody Sandlin, a junior on the University of Tennessee at Martin Skyhawk football team was named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list for place kickers.
Sandlin, a Goodlettsville native, led the Skyhawks in scoring as a sophomore.
He made 28-of-29 PATs and was 11-of-14 in field goals for a total of 61 points.

The Murray State men’s basketball program was again part of the national discussion when ESPN.com writer Pat Forde outlined his list of the top overachieving teams in the nation in an article posted May 27.

Benzor Simmons, who starred on the UT Martin men’s basketball team from 2007-11, has signed a professional contract to continue his playing career with the Caneros de la Romana of the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto in the Dominican Republic.
The move was announced by Caneros general manager Jorge Ubiera and head coach Carlos Medina recently.
The Caneros — the defending league champions — will open operations on Tuesday to prepare for the season.

Skyhawk WR Shiver makes list
UT Martin football senior Stephen Shiver was named to the College Football Performance Awards preseason watch list for wide receivers.
Shiver, from Maryville, led the Skyhawk receivers with 36 catches for 634 yards and five touchdowns.
He will enter the season with 73 receptions for 1,177 yards and eight touchdowns.
Shiver is one of seven UT Martin players ever to catch three touchdown passes in a single game.

A hunter’s safety course will take place at the Gleason Clinic on Aug. 1, 2, 4, 8 and 9.
In order to earn a passing grade, one must attend all five sessions.
The classes will begin at 6 p.m. each evening and it is open to people ages 9-and-up.
To hunt in Tennessee, every person born on or after Jan. 1, 1969 shall possess, in addition to all other licenses and permits required, proof of satisfactory completion of an approved hunter education course.

Gleason mourns loss
of softball assistant

Kristie Pruitt Arnold, an assistant coach within the Gleason High School softball program and a Gleason Elementary School teacher, died earlier this week at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville as a result of complications from surgery.
Arnold was a graduate of Bethel University and McKenzie High School.

G’field mourns Schlicht
The Greenfield community is in mourning the loss of former coach Shane Schlicht.
The 38-year-old died Sunday after he suffered a brain aneurysm. Schlicht had battled through numerous health issues the past few years.
Schlicht — a 1996 Freed-Hardeman graduate — was the junior high football skipper at G’field from 1998-2002. He also served as the school’s baseball skipper during that time and assisted on the high school gridiron, while also making contributions as a girls’ junior high basketball coach. Read More ...

Murray State men’s basketball coach Steve Prohm announced the hiring of assistant coach James Kane, who joins the Racers after two seasons at the University of Alabama.
Kane was Alabama’s video coordinator and served in the same role for two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth, all under head coach Anthony Grant.
At VCU, Kane was part of the staff that guided the Rams to back-to-back Colonial Athletic Association championships in the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. Read More ...

Man with Martin ties is USTA youth director
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — The U.S. Tennis Association recently ann-ounced former Union Citian Craig S. Jones has been named its director of youth play and competition.
In this role, he will be responsible for helping to reshape youth competition in the United States, particularly at the 10-and-under level, as well as overseeing USTA’s Jr Team Tennis.
Jones, a 1981 graduate of Union City High School, is the son of former Martin residents Dr. K. Paul and Keytha Jones of Santa Fe, N.M.
The elder Jones was a professor and administrator at UT Martin at Martin for 30 years.
The younger Jones, who started his new job June 1, reports to USTA managing director of youth tennis Scott Schultz. Read More ...

BRENTWOOD – On Friday the Ohio Valley Conference announced that the University of Tennessee at Martin is the recipient of the 2010-11 Team Sportsmanship Award for baseball.

Bethel University head football coach Dino Kaklis will travel north later this month to serve as a guest coach with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.
A long-time friendship with Calgary assistant coach Chris Jones led to the invitation to assist the Stampeders, who open up their regular season July 1 against Toronto.
This will be the second year in a row Kaklis will be a part of the staff.

Coming off a record-setting season that culminated with the program’s first win in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, the UT Martin baseball team has added Nico Zych out of St. Rita of Cascia High School out of Chicago.
A native of Monee, Ill., Zych is a 6-0, 170-pound utility player and right-handed pitcher who head coach Bubba Cates expects to contribute immediately in 2012.
“We are excited to sign Nico because he is so versatile,” Cates said. “He plays everywhere on the infield as well as some outfield. for quota hunting

Reelfoot National Wildlife Refuge has announced dates and application procedures for the 2011 deer quota hunts to be held on the federal refuge Nov. 4-6.
A drawing will be used to randomly select 150 applicants for the Grassy Island and Long Point units of the refuge:   100 applicants for Long Point and 50 for Grassy Island.  A permit fee of $12.50 per hunter is payable upon notification of selection for the quota hunt. Read More ...

Dresden’s Matt Beaty got the “Royal” treatment on the final day of the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.
The recently-graduated Lion baseball standout and Belmont University signee was picked by the Kansas City Royals in the 48th round last Wednesday.
“It was very exciting,” Beaty said of his being selected. “I was in Paducah, eating with a friend and the (St. Louis) Cardinals called me to say they were about to pick me.

For the first time since 1998, a UT Martin Skyhawk player was drafted by a Major League Baseball Team last week.
Karlen, a senior on this year’s team which advanced to the Ohio Valley Conference Base-ball Tournament, was drafted Wednesday morning in the 33rd round by the Washington Nationals.

It’s been quite a journey for the University of Tennessee at Martin’s designated hitter Phil Sorensen, and his debut college season was capped off with a spot on the Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team.
The Erie, Pa., native joins Wes Patterson (2008) as the only Skyhawks to earn the right to be called Freshman All-Americans.

UT Martin freshman Tyler Waltz was tied for 10th place in the bareback riding with a 73-point ride at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo.
His score was after two Sunday matinees of bulls, broncs and breakaway at the Casper Events Center.
Junior Vezain from Vernon College leads the bareback riding after Sunday.
