Annie 12.9.09
Dear Annie: My outgoing, popular and smart daughter, “Lizzy,” graduated from high school last June. During the school year, there was an investigation into rumors of inappropriate conduct between a male teacher and my daughter. Lizzy assured me nothing was going on. A few days later, the principal informed me that the rumors were not true and Lizzy was in the clear. Published in The Messenger 12.09.09 Read More ...

Experts: Placebo power behind many natural cures
Editor’s note: Ten years and $2.5 billion in research have found no cures from alternative medicine. Yet these mostly unproven treatments are now mainstream and used by more than a third of all Americans. This is one in an occasional Associated Press series on their use and potential risks. By M. MARCHIONE AP Medical Writer People looking for natural cures will be happy to know there is one. Two words explain how it works: “I believe.” It’s the placebo effect — the ability of a dummy pill or a faked treatment to make people feel better, just because they expect that it will. It’s the mind’s ability to alter physical symptoms, such as pain, anxiety and fatigue. Published in The Messenger 12.09.09 Read More ...

A major push is under way around the country to cut rehospitalizations, in part by arming patients with simple steps to keep their recovery on track — like getting past harried receptionists for quicker follow-up doctor visits, and reducing medication confusion. SF sweep not satisfying for Union City
Both Union City teams held South Fulton to under 50 points. Both UC squads won by double digits. However, neither Twister coach was satisfied after their respective District 14A openers. The Lady Tornadoes held off a late South Fulton charge to claim a 52-42 decision in a game termed as “sloppy basketball” by UC girls’ coach Eddie Suiter. “It’s a district victory on the road,” Suiter said when coming up with a positive that came out of Tuesday’s win. “I didn’t think we played very hard. We were trying to find the right combo of girls to put out there, but never could tonight.” Read More ...

LaRussa confident in Big Mac; Cards spend big bucks on Penny
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tony La Russa is confident Mark McGwire will do fine as the Cardinals’ hitting coach. Among the reasons the St. Louis manager is certain: Big Mac has already started his new job. “I think it’s going to work,” La Russa asserted Tuesday at the baseball winter meetings. A day earlier, former Cardinals manager and newly elected Hall of Famer Whitey Herzog said he thought McGwire might change his mind and back out. Herzog wondered whether McGwire would want to deal with questions about steroids. “I know how seriously he considered it,” La Russa said. “I think he has demonstrated to some of us that he has a lot to offer as a hitting coach.” La Russa said he’s spoken regularly to McGwire and gets no sense the former slugger is having second thoughts. McGwire has been talking to St. Louis hitters and watching tape, La Russa said. “I know the conversations I’ve had with him,” La Russa said. “We’ll be lucky to have him.” Read More ...

Although she was released about 11 hours later and returned to the pro golfer’s house, the event touched off the second media frenzy in two weeks surrounding Woods’ carefully guarded private life. Read More ...

Conference champ Crimson Tide rolls up most top SEC honors
ATLANTA (AP) — After an undefeated romp through the season, No. 1 Alabama kept right on rolling when the honors were handed out on The Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference team Monday. The Crimson Tide picked off the top three individual awards: running back Mark Ingram was named Offensive Player of the Year, linebacker Rolando McClain led the vote for the top defensive player and Nick Saban claimed his second straight Coach of the Year honor. The only award that didn’t go to Alabama? Freshman of the Year, which was won by Vanderbilt running back and return specialist Warren Norman. Alabama routed defending national champion Florida in the SEC championship game this past weekend and will face Texas for the BCS title. Not surprisingly, there was plenty of crimson on the AP’s first team, which included seven Tide players, more than any other school. Read More ...
