Lady Rebs survive to live another day BROWNSVILLE — Eddie Suiter admitted it was one of those “No! No! Good shot!” moments.
The Obion Central girls’ coach admitted his reaction when Kacee Eaves fired up a questionable 3-pointer with the Lady Rebels clinging to a one-point lead over Haywood and just 1:15 to play in Thursday’s Region 7-2A Tournament quarterfinals.
Eaves’ effort — from just right of the key — ended up banking off the backboard and into the net, giving OC a little bit of a cushion that it ultimately needed in finally escaping with a 61-58 victory over the Lady Tomcats. Read More ... By MIKE HUTCHENS, Messenger Sports Editor |

Redskins waste little time, nab Albert WASHINGTON (AP) — Moving swiftly in the first hours of free agency, the Washington Redskins opened their deep pockets and snagged perhaps the biggest name available: All-Pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.

The Redskins, known for their expediency in such matters, wasted no time scheduling a 5 p.m. news conference for their latest marquee signing. Read More ... By JOSEPH WHITE, AP Sports Writer |
Lady Vols can’t escape LSU this time BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — This time, LSU made the free throws at the end of a game and hung on for the win.
When LSU and Tennessee met at the Final Four in Tampa, Fla., last year, LSU made two free throws with 7.1 seconds left. But Tennessee scored at the buzzer to win en route to its eighth national championship.
On Thursday night, LSU got two free throws from Katherine Graham with 7.9 seconds left and a defensive stop to hold off No. 18 Tennessee 63-61.
LSU, trying to build its NCAA Tournament resume with a late surge, improved to 16-9 and 9-4 in the Southeastern Conference with its fourth straight win.
Tennessee (19-9, 8-5) lost for the third time in its past four games. Read More ...

Tiger’s tour return cut short by Clark MARANA, Ariz. (AP) — Golf waited eight months. Tiger Woods lasted only two days.
Woods had hardly any complaints about his first tournament since knee surgery in June, right after a momentous U.S. Open victory that made fans anticipate his return even more.
His swing looked as good as ever.
He felt no soreness or pain in his knee after walking 50 holes over three days, including a practice round.
What few people anticipated — especially after Woods opened the Accenture Match Play Championship with a resounding victory — was that he would be headed home after the second round Thursday. Read More ... By DOUG FERGUSON, AP Golf Writer |
