Joel Stowers

Joel Adams Stowers, 87, of Athens, Ga., died Jan. 19, 2020.
A Celebration of Life service was presented at Athens First Methodist Church on Jan. 22. Interment followed at Coldwater Methodist Church Cemetery in Elberton, Ga. Visitation was held at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home East in Athens on Jan. 21.
He graduated from Georgia Teachers College (now Georgia Southern University). He also received a master’s degree from Emory University School of Library Science, and later held the position as director of the University of Tennessee Library at Martin. After 29 years, he retired in 1999 and they moved to Athens. During all these years, he has continued to share his love of playing the piano by providing music in churches and nursing homes in the area.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Forbus Stowers; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Clara Adams Stowers and Adlai Stevenson Stowers of Elberton, Ga.; and two sisters and two brothers.
