A local organization with a tradition of helping veterans and their family members will join the National American Legion in celebrating a 100-year legacy next month.
The American Legion Post #55 of Martin was chartered in Weakley County Dec. 16, 1919. Since then, the local Post has expanded to include four units of service, support and honor for America and West Tennessee.
That is the theme of this year’s 100th anniversary at Post #55 and community members are invited to attend and celebrate with the more than 300 members of the combined units at Post #55.
Beginning at 5 p.m. Dec. 7, the date nationally-recognized as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, Martin Mayor Randy Brundige will present a proclamation recognizing Dec. 16, 2019, as American Legion Post #55 Centennial Day.
Guest speakers will offer a few moments at the podium and the Post will hold an official American Legion ceremony. Others have been invited to share the history of Post #55 and recall memories of their experiences with the American Legion.
Beginning shortly before 6 that evening, the tradition of the All-American Family Dinner will continue with special meal pricing. Each Saturday, the Post’s dining hall opens its doors to the community to serve its famous grilled ribeye steaks, smothered hamburger steaks and chicken and one-inch thick pork chops, along with a choice of potato and all-you-can-eat salad. Special pricing for the 100-year anniversary celebration will include $15 steak dinners and grilled chicken breast dinners for $10.
Community members of all ages are invited to the dining hall for reminiscing and celebration. Dinner concludes at 8 p.m.
Local singer Chuck Garrett and his band Midnight Point will take the stage in the lounge beginning at 8 that evening.
Midnight Point will offer covers of classic rock and everything in between. Guests are encouraged to dance the night away in the lounge, which offers beer and cocktails.
The lounge will be open to anyone 21 and older that evening; guests do not have to be a member to party the night away with Post #55.
The American Legion Legionnaires, Sons of the American Legion, Auxiliary Unit and Post #55 Legion Riders welcome all to this special anniversary event Dec. 7 to celebrate 100 years of service to the community. Check out Post #55 – Martin’s FB page for updates.
