Thomas Wilkins “Tom” Jones III, age 76, of Buchanan died Aug. 14, 2019, at Saint Thomas West Hospital in Nashville.
He retired after a 40-plus year career as a high school teacher, basketball coach and guidance counselor in northwest Tennessee and Alabama. He was a member of Sulphur Well Church of Christ in Springville, where he served as an elder. Tom grew up in Obion and was a member of the last graduating class of Obion High School in 1961. He loved walking on the beach, spending time on the lake with his family water skiing, being on his tractor and hiking. He loved his family very much, especially his children and grandchildren. Tom had a genuine servant’s heart, who had a quiet and gentle way of serving others, and lived his life well.
Tom was born Jan. 31, 1943, in Dyersburg to the late Judge T.W. Jones Jr. and Marion Moore Jones, who survives, of Union City.
He was married Aug. 15, 1967, to his wife of almost 52 years, Virginia Stuessy “Ginnie” Jones, who survives, of Buchanan.
Along with his mother and wife, he is also survived by one daughter, Dawn (Eric) Brown of Hoover, Ala.; one son, Bart (Nicole) Jones of Brentwood; one sister, Jenny Joy Fitch of Nashville; one brother, Richard (Jeanie) Jones of Old Hickory; one sister-in-law, Lou Novak of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla.; one brother-in-law, Sam (Donna) Stuessy of Aransas Pass, Texas; four grandchildren, Anna Jones, Lilly Jones, Evie Brown and Justin Brown; and several special cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Boyd Jones.
Arrangements are being handled by Ridgeway Funeral Home, 201 Dunlap St., Paris. Visitation will be Aug. 31 from 2-3 p.m. at Sulphur Well Church of Christ, 1760 Oak Grove Road South, Springville, TN 38256, with a celebration of life beginning at 3 pm.
