The local VFW’s mission is to honor the dead by serving the living and to help veterans, family and community. The post and auxiliary do that each year through programs to help the community, including a Breakfast for Supper Night, an Easter egg hunt and St. John’s CDS Halloween costume party. Other events have included flag retirement programs, chili cookoffs, hobo dinners and dances, spaghetti suppers, pork steak dinners, sock hops, HeeHaw shows, womanless beauty revues, Valentine Sweetheart dinners and dances, Memorial Day programs, Veteran’s Day programs and New Year’s Eve parties. Each year, the post also honors Voice of Democracy and Patriot Pen winners and names its Teachers of the Year.
