CUPS FOR CURE — The third annual Cups for the Cure, a cancer research fundraiser, was held Saturday in Martin and drew more than 200 supporters, including (from left) University of Tennessee at Martin student Stella Preuett, who is from Obion County, and Union City residents Paige Waites, Sarah Middlebrook and Sara Mathis. Co-hosted by the UTM Department of Visual and Theatre Arts and The Wesley Foundation, the event raised $4,500 for cancer research. UTM professor of art David McBeth and his students crafted 400 cups and members of First Methodist and The Wesley Foundation provided sweet treats. McBeth is firing another 50 cups this week to meet the requests from out-of-town supporters. The funds will benefit the Anna Kate Wenz Fight Foundation and the Joliet Oncology and Hematology Association, both groups that treated McBeth’s mother, whose cancer journey inspired the event. “We never know when disease is going to strike us, our family or neighbors. It is wonderful to see the community come together to support this project. I am deeply touched to see caring and compassion so actively demonstrated,” McBeth said.
