An inaugural event marking the anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center was attended Saturday by Sharon Fire Department firefighters Larry Stone and Josh Pope. Each participant climbed the tower at Discovery Park 10 times, in full gear, to recreate what firefighters were faced with on that tragic day. The event was organized by the Union City Fire Department. Sharon Firefighter Riley Holloman participated in a similar memorial stair climb in Nashville. A total of 343 firefighters lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, in rescue operations. Sharon Fire Chief Gary Eddings expressed his pride in his firefighters for not only being highly trained but maintaining peak physical condition to be able to carry out what they have learned when an emergency situation happens.
