Mrs. Ruth Evelyn Harper, 96, of Troy passed away 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2018, at Union City Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.
Private funeral services will be held at Troy United Methodist Church. The Rev. Judd Mowery and the Rev. Joe Thorn will officiate. Burial will follow at Terrace Hill Cemetery near Troy.
Edmaiston-Mosley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Troy United Methodist Church, 226 West Westbrook St., Troy, TN 38260.
She was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Troy, daughter of the late Hurt Glenn and Ruth (Hughes) Hopper. She graduated from the University of Tennessee School of Nursing in Memphis in 1943.
She was commissioned to the United States Navy Nurse Corp in 1944 and was called to active duty. She was stationed at Treasure Island Naval Hospital in San Francisco, where she met and married Chief Hospital Corpsman Ed Harper in 1946.
She furthered her education by receiving her master’s degree in nursing education from Indiana University.
She touched the lives of students at Emory University in Atlanta, the University of Arkansas in Little Rock and the University of Tennessee at Martin, where she retired as dean of the nursing program.
She was a member of Troy United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Ed Harper of Troy.
She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn Brown Hopper and Leon Hopper.

She was also the Director of the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in the 60’s located in Memphis. A great individual.
