HISTORIC PROJECT — Former Westview High School football player Markei Guy was instrumental in directing last week’s recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis. Guy, whose father Stanley Evans is a salesman at Herman Jenkins Motors in Union City, served as the manager for two significant projects leading up to the commemoration of 50 years since the assassination of King — the “I Am A Man” Plaza and the MLK Reflection Site. Of the “I Am a Man” Plaza, he proudly described the Italian granite brought in to help form the centerpiece, King’s final speech engraved within the bronze and steel structure, and the wall listing the names of each of the 1,300 sanitation workers whose strike brought King to the city in April 1968.
