COUNTY’S TOP PLAYER — Record-setting Union City High School fullback Trey Jones was announced as The Messenger’s Obion County Prep Player of the Year at Thursday’s UCHS Fall Sports Banquet. Jones helped the Golden Tornadoes to the program’s fourth state championship in the last nine years and first in UC’s inaugural season back in Class 2A by rushing for a program-record 2,436 yards in less than 13 full games of playing time. He eclipsed the 100-yard mark 11 times and had two games of more than 200 yards, highlighted by a 329-yard effort against Trinity Christian Academy. Jones was named the BlueCross Bowl Offensive Most Valuable Player after running for 188 yards in 44 attempts in the Twisters’ thrilling 27-21 double overtime victory over Tyner Academy. Presenting the award was longtime Messenger sports editor Mike Hutchens.
