HELICOPTER CRASH LANDS

HELICOPTER CRASH LANDS — Emergency personnel help the three-member crew of an Air Evac Lifeteam helicopter which crash- landed shortly before noon today at South Home and Harrison streets, just across from the Obion County Emergency Communications District (E-911) office. Based on preliminary information gathered at the scene, Union City Police Chief Perry Barfield said the helicopter apparently was landing in a lot across from the 911 office for a demonstration and the mishap occurred while the aircraft was setting down, with its back end hitting the ground and its rotor (foreground) becoming disengaged and coming to rest across Home Street next to the 911 office. All three crew members were taken from the scene by ambulance for treatment of injuries, but the extent of their injuries was unknown at press time. The crew members were all out of the aircraft and sitting on the ground along Home Street when The Messenger arrived. No one on the ground was injured. A power line was downed during the incident and Barfield said the 911 office was operating with a backup generator. Police, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, emergency management and other first responders, as well as an electric company crew, remained on the scene at press time. The Federal Aviation Administration has been contacted and the area will remain cordoned off until the FAA investigation is complete.
